I'm not a huge JP fan. He has terrible at-bats, is an average game caller, and strikes out a ton. I'm also not a huge fan of his blocking abilities for balls in the dirt.
His clubhouse value is a little overrated too, IMO. To me he's a bottom tier starting catcher in the league.
I would trade his power for a higher OBP and contact rate anyday, which by all means is what D'Arnaud will bring.

Jays finally need a 5th starter this week - wonder who it's going to be. Wouldn't surprise me if it was Villaneuva again, he was OK last year, better option than Laffey anyway.

I wouldn't be shocked if it was Hutchison actually or even Carreno again. Both have pitched really well in the early part of the year.

You're right, Carreno seems like a good call, especially after that good start in Vegas, that place destroys pitchers. One reliable vet would really stabilize the rotation right now but I've read so much prospect porn over the last few months I don't want to see any of the top 10 arms go anywhere, so much potential, and I think if anything some of them are underrated.
Hutchinson is going to be really good, I think they should be wary of bringing him up too soon though, still only pitched 30 innings above A ball. Ideally I'd like to see the young pitching prospects all get a full season in at their levels this year and move up next year slowly, especially after what happened with Snider and Drabek early in their careers. That way the first wave ends up in Buffalo for their AAA year instead of Vegas too.
For a bit I was half thinking they'd go after Lannan from the Nats - he is pitching awful in AAA right now and would be an ideal buy low guy with a pretty solid track record for a number 5 guy. Pretty much like an older Cecil though, no velocity at all.

I believe in the Jays.

They will have to pick somebody up eventually this season, because I imagine McGowan, Alvarez and Drabek will all be on a pretty strict innings limit. I would have to think its likely that all 3 could be shut down by the final month of the season.

If the Jays are in it around the middle to late June, I would guess Francisco Lariano becomes a Jay.

Mcgowan & Alvarez will have inning limits for sure..... I doubt Drabek will have a limit.
With McGowan missing the 1st Month of the season (maybe more), will a limit come into a effect?

Drabek's never pitched over 179 innings. Not sure he's ready for the full unlimited 200+ innings yet. He is 25 already, so should have the strength to do it, but I guess it'll all depend on how they're doing in August to determine what all the pitchers limits are.

But the general rule is it's okay to go up by 20% or so per year, so Drabek shoudl be fine. McGowan may not be as injured as the Jays are saying, just keeping him on the DL a little longer so that his innings limit doesn't come into play.
If the Jays are in contention, my guess is they will go after potential free agents pitcher like wandy Rodriguez, Francisco Lariano or maybe a long term solution if the price is right. They could then move guys like Alavrez or anyone else who may exceed the limit to the 'pen like the Rangers did with Ogando last year.

It seems unlikely that AA would bring in a rental unless he got him for an extremely cheap return. I think it would be more likely that he makes a play for a decent mid-rotation guy who could be with us for a few years. Who knows though, it will all depend on how our current guys do this year, and also whether or not some of the younger guys are deemed ready to make a few starts at the big league level.

Agreed AA doesn't go for a rental, he's much more about the long term but I do think any moves being made from here on out will be geared towards making the big league club better.

Totally agree, I believe AA would like to acquire a proven #1 or #2 starter..... however those types of pitchers are hard to acquire...

And just like that it appears that Sergio Santos' 2012 season has come to an end.
He's on the 15 day DL with shoulder inflammation, which most of the time means that the pitcher will be shut down for the year otherwise risk what happened to McGowan

“Santos said his shoulder didn’t feel right in saving Friday night’s win, and when the pain got worse Saturday morning the decision was made to shut things down for a while in order to nip any potential issue in the bud,” writes Mike Wilner at Miked Up. “Manager John Farrell says the move is precautionary and the Jays don’t expect Santos to miss a lot of time, but you never know with shoulders.”

Santos MRI showed no structural damage. Is on a "no throw" program for 10 days to 2 weeks and will be evaluated at that time. #bluejays
