^^They're saying 5 meter waves.
Also there was just an explosion at the #3 reactor in Fukushima. Details and severity unknown now, waiting and watching the news for details.
Just felt a minor quake here about an hour ago, centered farther in the north.
Ok they just said in a press conference the damage and situation is very similar to when the first reactor blew. So the outer concrete shell collapsed or blew off, but the steel housing around the reactor is intact. The radiation emitted was probably minimal again, and they don't need to increase the evacuation radius from 20km. Hope the people in the immediate area are ok.

The highest tsunami waves on Friday were 7.3m weren't they?! 5 meters is going to bad. No one is reporting this yet.
EDIT: False alarm? That's good news, hopefully it didn't cause too much panic for nothing.

Thats good to hear.
However, Japan's Meteorological Agency and the The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue tsunami warnings. Japan's Meteorological Agency said the morning's aftershock had produced minor wave action that did not warrant an alert

As soon as I read in the article that it was detected by helicopter, I thought something was strange about the warning.

From what i read, it was pretty much expected. Uncontrollable buildup of hydrogen just like what happened with #1.

He has no track record. Make enough predictions and some are going to be right, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

In an earthquake they fear this land will liquify, therefore we had to drive several piles deep into the ground and use them to support the weight of the building.

The foundation of a building can vary quite a bit too depending on the area. I know in Richmond in particular it's very challenging as it's pretty much silt. Having a structure withstand an earth quake is one thing, but it's a potential tsunami that follows that can wash away a foundation that they also do need to account for.
There really has been a fair amount of seismic activity in the Pacific recently going back to the expectation that Mount St.Helens was acting up, two quakes in New Zealand, two in Chile, and now this major one in Japan. It does make me wonder if that big one on our own West coast is coming sooner than later. Again with that...the buildings for the most part sould withstand it, but the following tsunami is what would really wreak havoc. Which seems to be what really made things much worse in Japan.

Apparently a large volcano is southern Japan is now at a 52 year high for activity. It will probably be nothing, but that has be stressful as well.

Can anyone trained in geology explain why the initial earth quake was an 8.8, and then upgraded in a 9.0? Do the instruments for measuring earthquake intensity have a large error? That is a pretty large difference.

Wow, freedom of speech and all, but... wow.
Pearl Harbor was 2300 deaths, almost all military casualties. The atomic bombings were in the scope of 100x that. Both of those were military actions during time of war. Did I really just dignify this prick with a response?

Hats off to anyone working feverishly on site to try and cool these reactors. I am sure once all the dust settles, there is going to be some every day people made national heroes both alive and posthumously. Sounds like the last reactor explosion has 7 people missing. Geebus, can you imagine how terrifying it would be working next a giant reactor that could hit 5000 degrees.... fast.
Hats off to you gentlemen. In Japanese culture honor and courage is huge, and you define it.
