They stopped charging in April. It is awesome because that was a thorn in my side as I have two xboxes running optik.

I believe they still giving them free for a 3 year contract for HS Internet. I didn't take that deal but they gave me $17 off for year instead for signing the contract. So it almost works out to the same. I recommend buying an Xbox yourself and taking the monthly discount.

Also do you know you can run Optik on the XBOX? It will save you the hassle of having two devices running and the expense of a switch.
Excellent. Thanks for the information. I know how to operate a basic home network but I wasn't sure what to do in this situation.

As far as the Optik on Xbox.. I am just reading the FAQ and came across this:

What are the minimum requirements for using my Xbox 360 as a digital box with Optik TV?

You must have an unmodified Xbox 360 with a built-in hard drive, have a LIVE account, and subscribe to Optik Internet. Additionally, your Xbox 360 cannot be the only digital box connected to Optik TV in your home.

How much does it cost to use my Xbox 360 as a digital box for Optik TV?

There is no monthly fee associated with access and maintenance of the Xbox 360 on the TELUS Fibre Optic Network. A starter kit (Universal Media Remote and required cables) is required to use your Xbox 360 as a digital box and will be supplied for a one-time fee of $50. Existing Optik TV clients wanting to connect an Xbox 360 as a digital box will require a TELUS technician visit; $100 fee applies.

So it doesn't look like I'll be able to do this. I only have one TV so it would be the only digital box connected. Also, I don't have the media remote. Along with the $100 fee, I might as well just buy a network switch.

Got it rd_aaron. Didn't realize it was the only digital box in the house.

The switch is your ticket then.

Haven't seen this posted in this thread but how the hell do you know how much of the PVR capacity you've used up?

I can't find it anywhere through the various menus, and I've searched online. I'm inclined to think that it isn't available at the moment.

I have 92 recordings right now and I know I am getting to the limit but it's a pain to have to count the number of hours I have recorded.

Ditto with internet speed by the way. In the last 3 weeks its been very choppy for me.

PVR capacity used is under settings and then system resources. It is shown as a percentage.

The remote is pissing me off something fierce. I rearely get both tv and stb to turn at the same time then its a battle to block the sensor. I think I have it and 10 seconds late the friggin box shuts off because I couldnt quite block out the remote's rays.

that's the one thing i really don't like about the Telus box, the remote is a POS. the Shaw remote is so much better, i wish i could just use my old one instead

Can anyone check my Optik and tell me if I can upgrade to faster service? 1.7MB down ( 15MBps profile) is nice and stable all the time (shaw speed fluctuated more than a New Hampshire nurse according to load)

I had my first freeze last night after about 42 days in service. Just had to power cycle the modem and PVR, everything came back up in about 15 minutes.

i'm not liking how sluggish the PVR is to commands. sometimes when i hit the record button while browsing in the guide, it takes a good 10-15 seconds for it to actually register. and if i try to do anything else in that time i get a message saying that the PVR system is busy. i was hoping Telus was better in that regard since the Shaw box had the same problem

My interface is glitchy every once and a while, and sometimes it plays around with my aspect, not giving me full wide screen.

Other than that, we've been happy with it in the week that we've had it.

Just as an aside, usage limits on practically all Telus internet plans have doubled. Optik Turbo 25, which is what I have, has gone to 500GB/month which is spectacular.

This is no doubt a response to Shaw's new plans, it would be nice to see a bump in speeds but infrastructure is going to limit Telus's ability to do that. Maybe they could do it for all the FTTH clients, maybe if I ask nicely?

Just signed up for Optik last night. Great price for the first 6months/year. After that it is about what I'm paying now with Bell TV and Shaw phone/internet.

The programming options are almost identical to Bell and having it bundled makes it cheaper.

That and I got a new 250gb Xbox. I already have an Xbox but it is the old kind and only has a 10gb HD.

I'm blind but I can't seem to find their useage limits on their site. I would have the regular Optik (15?) if I switched and I can't seem to find what limit that would be.

Telus UBB as compared to what Shaw recently announced is really the only thing holding me back from switching.

Here's the link to the page with all the info. Optik High Speed (15) shows as 250GB per month and Optik Turbo (25) shows as 500GB per month.

Apparently I'm not very good at searching for info.

250 gb is double the quota I currently have with Shaw after they already increased their bandwidth quotas. I think this may push me over the edge and make me sign up with Telus.
