I imagine it must have been hard for a small-town kid in the 80s to go through that especially since his 'crush' is very demonstrably not going to return those feelings.
I just think that if you want to explore that angle then go for it...but...go for it. Dont feel like you're going for it and dance around the issue.
I thought they did a good job of it with Maya Hawke.

I actually think the way they're handling it is more realistic. This was the 80s and the stigma around homosexuality was pretty brutal still. These kids are supposed to be more welcoming and open minded but, realistically, one or two would still be jerks about it and the fans of today would place modern feelings on 30-40 year old perspective and turn on those characters.
I think how they're handling Robin's sexuality is better for the show. They're being more realistic with how it would go down in the 80s (not everyone knowing) and letting a "macho" guy like Steve be understanding to give some hope to viewers in a similar situation.

Will escapes the Upside Down only to get stuck in the Friend Zone
a high school freshman attempting to come out in the 80's would get absolutely brutalized, mentally/socially/physically. it's totally reasonable for him to be as afraid of revealing his true self as he is of fighting a demogorgon.

I didn't think it was subtle at all. This is small town America in the 80's, no way he would have actually said anything.

That's fan-made, so I wouldn't rely on it for information. That said, I don't think they've begun shooting season 5 yet, so 2024 could be optimistic.
The good news is the Duffers have previously said there will be a time jump between seasons 4 and 5 so the characters will be closer to the kids' actual ages.

Great season overall. A very bitter-sweet ending. If Max recovers is she still likely to be blind? She'll likely have some kind of link to Vecna. I like how they've managed to weave all the different storylines and character development together. That's a real strength of this show that you don't see successfully pulled off often.

There’s the character to kill off to get that actor off the show

Everything about that character during the entire season screamed "awkward".

Yeah, he worked well in the first season as a MacGuffin to move the story forward, but as an active character? He's pretty thin.

when you spend at least half of the entire series being dummied by the denizens of the Upside Down, you're going to be pretty far behind everyone else in character development. maybe the Duffers secretly hate Noah Schnapp because they never give him any agency, all with the dumbest haircut in any fictional universe.

Mike's haircut is so much worse than Will's.
We all had Will's haircut at some stage in our lives, and there's unfortunately pictures of us as 8-year-olds wearing a dark blue sweater vest, red tie, and grey slacks that somehow didn't get destroyed in the basement flood of '17 when everything of actual sentimental value was lost, but I digress . . .
Mike's hair, though? Next-level bad.

That haircut was pretty common in the late 70s/early 80s.

I have had both of these haircuts.
I'm at more of a Christopher pike at the moment but it took a while to get here.

The Will character is brutal. Part of me thinks he is being setup to be the bad guy in the next season. His disillusionment around his relationship with Mike and his connection to the upside down world will bring Vecna through. Other wise he is just awkward and useless to the story line.
And my kid is still upset about Eddie.

I don't get how there can be a time jump when S4 ended with Hawkins on fire. Do they just quarantine the entire town and everyone moves away to try to live normally?

Pretty much. Fires extinguished, the town starts rebuilding from the "earthquake", some move away for various reasons, a few years pass, things go to crap again, one last reunion, etc.
