I was bored, so I actually went and took a real look at the Habs. What is interesting there is that there is only one player who could balance out the salary in a Johnny Gaudreau deal, and it happens to be the same player that Habs fans are trying to run out of town. You have to love it when fans decrease a players perceived value.
JG and Ryan (50% retained)
for
Jon Drouin and Joel Armia
Cole Caufield and Noah Juulsen as sweeteners
makes the money work, and the Canadiens wouldn't cry too much about it because they are getting the best player in the trade.

I think that is an overpayment but I think super highly of Kotkaniemi. I would probably do him alone for Gaudreau. I think he will be a legit top line C.

Hes still a lotto ticket. Only 8 points in 32 games last season and 0 in 4 in the finnish league this season. I think hes got a potential but gaudreau is worth great potential + a roster player. Gaudreau is a pretty huge upgrade on drouin

Like I’ve been saying for a long time... Lindholm makes Backlund expendable. Literally a younger, cheaper, more talented upgrade. Backlund for a true top-six right-shot RW is the perfect move for this team. It gives us two complete scoring lines and a solid punishing line. Then we just need 3 pairs of cheap legs on the 4th that aren’t attached to mistake-prone brains, and we’re golden.
The book on us is shut down the top line, play against our middle two lines and wait for the fourth line to get caught in a mismatch, or just make enough “not the right plays” until you can capitalize. We finally found a really good third line in Bennett, Looch and Dube; having two serious scoring lines and a 4th that can eat 10 mins a night without putting us in the hole means there’s no more book.
Gaudreau Monahan Tkachuk
Mangiapane Lindholm RW
Lucic Bennett Dube
Simon/Nordstrom Gawdin Leivo
Backlund and a pick for that RW (a good RW).
Ryan to (partially) recoup the pick and shed some cap.
Not saying either of these guys are possible, but Backlund is expendable and we’re a Nylander or Reinhardt away from being a serious contender.

Fair enough. If Montreal offered that package I would drive Johnny from his home in NJ to Montreal myself.

some of you guys think 99 point players grow on trees...last two Flames to get 99+ points
Gaudreau

If the Flames trade Gaudreau the return better be good

Honestly, it is fun to think about the fits with these other teams, but I can't look past NJ sitting there with 17M in cap and only 16 players on the roster. I think that a trade would already be done (if there is one to make) but Fitzgerald is fully aware of the amount of power he currently wields because of the flat cap.
He is going to victimize Tampa Bay, NYI and Vegas long before a trade for Johnny comes into play.
I believe the roster we have right now is the one that will be hitting the ice come January.

What Ward also said which I liked was he didn’t like calling lines 1,2,3 and 4. Wants to roll 4. Makes sense on a shortened season.

Until we see that Lindholm suddenly makes Backlund expendable, for a full season, I think that would be pre mature.
We don’t even know for sure yet that Lindholm will indeed play Center, and if he does and struggles, then he slides back to RW, where we have already seen him have success.

I think if we acquired Drouin, he would end up the new whipping boy. Very frustrating player to watch.
I think, from the recent comments from Ward and Tree, that we are being buttered up for a Monahan trade IMO.

Oh, so like the book on every team in the league.
Alrighty then.

If they want to try lindholm at center. Just jiggle up the 1st line. Monahan to wing. Put him on his off wing to snipe. Worst thing flames do is force a trade and lost center depth.

Iginla was so close to being on this list with his 94 points in 70 games. The one year in his entire career that he didn't stay healthy he was on pace for well over 100 points.

If general managers actually listened to fans, they would shortly be sitting in the stands with them.

I suppose that depends on what fans they listen to and how good the GM is in the first place as there are several in this league that aren't very good. Plenty of GM's make moves that fans immediately identify as poor that play out as poorly as fans predicted they would.

EVERY individual has opinions that will turn out to be wrong. No one bats 100%. The difference with a GM is that their opinions are all public.
And it is also often the case that a GM's decision is widely panned but then turns out to be quite astute.

Yes but really that's much more rare isn't it? How many July 1st's do we all sit here amazed at some of the incredibly poor contracts handed out? NHL GM's screw up a lot. The fact that Trelving could be considered an average GM given his blunders is telling of how bad GM's are in general in this league. I will give GM's a pass when it comes to drafting as nobody has a crystal ball when it comes to predicting how good a teenage hockey player will be playing against men but pro scouting in this league sucks period.
