It was also missing most of the goofy charm of the original, the director was taking the source material way too seriously

Why is it so hard to make another regular Ghostbusters movie? Why does it have to be a kids movie, or a female empowerment piece?
Ghostbusters: Afterlife was Ghostbusters + Goonies, and I loved it.

They tried with Ghostbusters II and it was not great. 2016 had entertaining moments (Hemsworth stealing most) but it was not the same kind of comedy and was a mess.

Afterlife wasn't perfect but it captured a lot of the feeling from the first and that ending pulled all the right heart strings.

In my opinion, the original Ghostbusters is a near perfect comedy sci-fi. It'll be impossible to try to replicate it.

I think the best option is an ongoing series so they can take it in a different route and not even try to match the original.

Licorice Pizza was great. One of my favorite movies of the year. A lot of very good performances. Phillip Seymour Hoffman's son Cooper was great, Alana Haim was incredible,
Spoiler!
. There were so many scenes that stood out it's hard to keep track.

Highly highly recommend.

Top movies of the year in no particular order:

Dune
Licorice Pizza
Azor
Spencer
The Card Counter
Judas and The Black Messiah
Nomadland

Worst movies of the year:
Cry Macho
Old

As did I. It's a wonderful film with just the right amount of nostalgia and respect for the original, as well as a pretty solid passing of the torch story with the new cast/characters. It's not a perfect movie, but it didn't need to be.

The Phoebe character (McKenna Grace) completely steals the show, and I think they could make at least one or two more films with her as the lead and they would probably be successful. For such a young actor, she's got a lot of likeability and charisma.

Many Saints of Newark was boring. It was too bland to even be bad. The guy who played Dickie and Vera Farmiga as Tony’s mom were the only highlights. The guys who played Sil and Paulie were so bad it felt like an SNL impression. Liotta was wasted in both roles. The plot went nowhere. The call backs were dumb.

It felt like watching two episodes of a crappy sopranos ripoff from Starz or Showtime. And then it just ended and nothing happened.

Spoiler!

Really liked Ben Afflick's new one, The Tender Bar. Directed by George Clooney which is generally pretty good. Captured the vibe of the 70's and 80's and was more about telling a story as opposed to flash and over the top plothole sillyness involved with most flicks today. It was refreshing in that it was about character development. Really enjoyed it as all the actors were really good.

agree with all that are liking on Ghostbusters Afterlife, really a fun flick that exudes the feeling from the first few films.

Being the Riccardos was a horrible waste of time though, poorly acted and hugely boring. Kidman was simply the wrong choice, the only saving grace was Javier Bardem as Desi.

Now on to Split, but it's proving a bit difficult to find on streaming, so I'll likely have to rent it. Hope it's a good one!
Glass may be the worst movie I've even seen, but Split is worth the watch.

Watched this last night and thought it was incredibly boring.
Not my type of movie, but I can see how others may like it.

I thought it was very compelling and there was a sense of anxiety throughout the whole film. Though I was disappointed with ending. Felt like it just stopped without any resolution.

Maggie Gyllenhaal doing a Steven Soderbergh impression, and I really dislike the way that Soderbergh tells stories, and shoots. Coleman was great, the rest of the actors looked like they signed up for a movie with a script and were surprised that there wasn't one.

The tender bar was good . It's on Prime for the next 2 days only.

Reminded me of something like Almost Famous.

Clooney directed it, Ben Affleck was actually enjoyable in his role.

POST The Village? The Village is a goddamned crime against humanity and should have resulted in Night’s public execution. Easily the angriest I’ve ever been while watching a film. Calling it a steaming pile of trash is disrespectful to steaming piles of trash.

Speaking of M. Night... "Old" was the hardest I've ever laughed in a theatre.

That was one of the craziest cinematic experiences of my entire life. My gal and I just looked at each other in stunned disbelief.
