He has two years left on his deal. He can play the game this year come back for the playoffs and be productive next year and land a deal….. all to try to get Mavi and Pissy to stay

Wouldn't offering both the same contract, which needs the same picks as compensation (therefore can't be done) be a fireable offencew?

Not sure how it would work but for once I would like to see one of these teams caught in the lie and punished for it. And it would be oh so sweet if that team was the oilers. Would need to be a doctor revealing he was pressured by the team or something.

Perhaps I misremember

No, I'm pretty sure that is not the case. Several teams in the past has gone into the the season over the cap if you counted players on LTIR.

Yup. Oiler fans and their media bootlickers have been saying this since 2015.
What was that hilarious quote from MacLean a few years ago: "It's not a question of if they'll win it, but how many cups they'll win" or something along those lines?

|
I think this is the big difference between the two. Kane is probably unwilling to be done with this contract, and I am willing to bet his ego has him believing he has another few years of good contracts left in him. Humble is not a term I think anyone has used about Kane in his life. This means that he probably isn't okay just sitting out when he knows he will need to show he can perform for another contract. The other thing is both Vegas and TB players had legitimate surgeries to provide cover for cap shenanigans. Is Kane willing to have an actual unnecessary surgery just for the oilers, who he has started to battle with this season, at the risk of both his physically abilities as well as future contracts?

The fall will be fast, hard and will likely last a looooong time.
Just need to fade the next two McDavid years and hope he leaves.

Almost bank the following,
- Bowman as GM
- Kane on LTIR
- Carter Hart by the New Year
And my wildcard in coach Q brought in as an associate/asssistant coach
|
If I could put money on a parlay of these things I certainly would. Lots.

Oilers also trading away a (potentially) unprotected 2026 first round pick is awesome. I hope they decide to trade their 2025 first round pick this season and are in full teardown mode the year after once Drai walks and McDavid informs the team he won't be re-signing.

Window is the rest of McDavid's contract, then that place will become a hospice.
I like that they're loading up because it makes walking Leon to FA more likely. Not a chance they gut the roster at the TDL and slim chance Peepee inks an extension early.

They already traded their 2025 pick, unless they miss the playoffs & finish in the bottom 12.

They don't really have any other choice.
So simply need to derail the upcoming year and it all falls apart after that.

Ok... but what happens if they decide not to match? Then you're stuck paying either of them 4.5M a year. Why not just call Gary and ask him to deduct 4.5M from your cap space and save yourself the trouble. Actually, you'd be better off that way than if you also had to have the player too.
