Yamamotos situation is short term

Well it is true that the Oilers have circumvented the cap with Smith and Keith. Everyone knows what happened there. It will be interesting to see how they can make Yamamoto disappear for the rest of the season.

It’s really hard not to conclude that there’s a different standard.
That’s ok though, it still won’t make a difference

Hey! Welcome back after the Oilers 4 game winning streak!!!
But even an Oilers homer has to think something seems amiss. I mean come on.
Cash strapped and non complaint and one guy retires, getting a job in the Oilers front office after only being there for a year and the other guy is "injured" despite not being injured when we last saw him.
Then Kane comes back and Yamamoto is then put on LTIR to accommodate Kane's salary.
I won't even touch on the amount of powerplay time or the lack of identical calls against. I watch the odd Oiler game and the number of times I watch an opponent get mauled and think, "If that's McPowerplay, that's a penalty." But you don't see other teams media and players complaining to the NHL about the "rulebook".

IMO it's just one of those things the NHL doesn't want to overly investigate given other teams have got away with it and as long as players are getting compensated one way or another the NHLPA doesn't care. It just seems that a level of circumvention is allowed as long as it's not so blatant that it becomes an embarrassment to the league. I will say the Oilers appear to be pushing the boundaries.

According to the Oilers he failed his physical which seems kind of predetermined seeing the GM predicted over the summer it would happen. It appears he is the first player to ever have a non-defined career ending injury.

It's actually kind of ridiculous but it frustrates me that the Flames couldn't just do something like this with Lucic instead of having to give up 1st to get rid of Monahan.

how is Yamamoto LTIR eligible with a timetable of "later this month"
Oilers are abusing LTIR left, right and center
and when did Smith leave with a career ending injury? he finished the playoffs for them
surely you don't have a blind spot even when it comes to the Oilers?
tell me how these moves are less egregious than the lightning with Kucherov
loser, corner cutting team should be forced to honour its bad contracts like every other team
but even when allowed to essentially cheat the system, they'll still fall short

Lucic would have to agree to it and it takes a special player that is going to fake being on the LTIR.

Yup. Lucic has already done his solid for the Flames by agreeing to be exposed in the expansion draft. For him to agree to this means he has to (a) lie and (b) not play, both of which are probably against his own code. Hell, LTIR shenanigans might be against Treliving's code too. And other GMs as well.

imo Lucic didn't do a solid by waiving for the expansion draft. Whether he waived or did not, he wasn't going to be selected.

He certainly played the odds, but he still agreed to it when he didn't have to.

i've mentioned this here before - one of my customers knows smith and it's his groin that's 'done'. does it mean that he's too hurt to play... who knows... that's not for me to say.
i still take comfort in the fact that no matter how much the oilers try to cheat the system they will continue to fail as a franchise becuz they are no good!

This is 100% legit, not sure how you argue it. Hockey is more of a business now than it’s ever been, the NHL has sunk literally billions of dollars to make McPersonality the face of the league. A couple things,
- for financial reasons it is imperative to have the face of the league who is in their prime in the playoffs every year, it just is. Sidney Crosby has not been in the playoffs twice
- the fallout if the Oilers are out this year is massive, no chance McDavid stays. The league knows this and the black mark that would result against the face of the league would be enormous and the marketing potential of him would be severely dismissed.
League has let them get away with murder to try to mitigate themselves basically. From someone who loves the game of hockey it is absolutely disgusting the measures being taken to protect profitability.
