Hidalgo got shot in that offseason after that breakout season, and never really got it back.

That fan wearing the Biggio city connect jersey. That's tough man. Was he even on the team when they debuted?
Horwitz obliterated that ball. So good to see.

Losses are to be expected. But this is putrid. Oakland sucks. They can put up runs but they also give up a ton. 1 run in 2 games against them is hilariously bad.

From 8-1 to 8-4. Feels like putting lipstick on a pig but I guess it's better than nothing.

Jays have 3rd worst run differential in the entire MLB. Indicates they are probably worse then their record.
It is absolutely bananas that all indications are there will be no changes in management/front office.

I think it's 50/50. All of us have to realize that just because Shapiro is a well spoken politician, ultimately he is responsible to a corporation. If the corporation sees their bottom line not meeting expectations for a few years in a row, where they've admitted as much that's the case, there will be someone who will need to be scapegoated. It's just the way it is in these situations, that even the best speakers, just can't get around. You're right that there's little indication, because Shapiro needs his guy to perform whatever he needs to do (scouting, setting up the off-season plan, talking to other GMs about what's out there, etc.). Come end of season, Shapiro will have to go to the board to present his plan for the off-season, reasons for failure etc., and no doubt he'll be grilled about Atkins and the coaching staff. Is he going to be able to hold off getting rid of Atkins after 9 seasons of mediocrity? Personally I don't think he'll be able to. Especially last year he kept him to keep an air of calm and continuity to gear up for the Ohtani run. To push the same narrative for Soto isn't likely to play well, and puts his own head on the line. So he may be calm and resolute now, but I think when all is settled Atkins has to be chopped. I also think the manager gets dumped too (and maybe the full staff as well). It's very difficult repeat the same behaviors these days in the sports scene. Loyalty only follows if there are results, and I just can't see it playing out the same way of rolling it back. There is little justification that Shapiro can sell to the board here.

Who knows, maybe Shapiro is planning his own exit too.
Renos are done, just in time for the most disappointing season in 6, 7, or more, years…but point is that he put the plans are in place as far as renos go, and got approval from owners on how those renos would help generate x $ of additionalincome every year based on certain projections…that done, his role is finished, really for a big part of why he’s been brought in.
He could very easily wipe his hands and leave the Jays for someone else that he can promise to help turn around and be employed for another 6 or 7 years.
But another season or two of un filled expectations in Toronto means a lot of the cache he has built up around the renos and having built a team that look to be near the brink of going all the way, before this season, would be gone if he still can’t turn around the onfield fortunes with the big payroll he has.

Even if there is new management I still don't see how the Jays can turn it around in the offseason. There are so many bloody holes to fill on this roster. And some of the "kids" have completely fallen off. Schneider has been exposed completely and isn't a big leaguer unless he makes some adjustments to lay off the high fastball and not try to pull the outside pitch.
The rotation is what really concerns me. You have Gausman, Berrios, Bassit, and Rodriguez.
Gausman is a shell of himself and can't avoid hard contact.
Berrios loves giving up the long ball. He'll eat innings but you have to win games 6-5 when he's on the mound.
Bassitt is a decent back end guy. But every now and then you'll have a game like yesterday where it's over before it even began.
Rodriguez has never pitched more than 80 innings in a year. His stuff is good but his command can be fleeting.
All that for near 100 million in payroll. Good Times.

The most disappointing thing for me is the lack of player development.
The season overall sucks, but key players underperfoming and a top 5 bullpen goes to bottom 5 because of injuries and unexpected poor performance, it's brutal but it happens.
Team just doesn't find and develop enough stars, especially on the pitching side. It needs to be fixed.
