Unfair? My arse it was. His post makes it seem like Trump was a neutral influence in whether or not things went to hell. You can argue that the US political system has been broken for a long time, and you'll get no argument from surely most of us in this thread. But to give Trump zero credit for taking a bad situation and making it worse is flat out bullsh-t.

For those people who were complimenting Fox news earlier...
They’ve been instructed not to refer to Biden as President Elect.

All those people who were posting in this thread on Tuesday night about what a horrible candidate Biden was and how the Democratic Party threw away the election to the worst president in US history by not nominating someone else are going to stop by to post a mea culpa and eat crow any minute now, right? Right? Guys...?

Georgia is looking pretty good to stay blue at the end. So having two GOP controlled states (Arizona too) for Biden to win and push him over the line makes the cheating claims even more difficult.

Agreed. Hopefully progressives will be able to read the tea-leaves a bit in terms of the compromises Biden is going to have to make with a McConnell-led Senate, too.

I don't mind admitting it (though I'm pretty sure I said I still thought he was going to win - my betting slips sure say so).
I think the down ballot losses/lack of gains should raise some eyebrows going forward and hopefully it leads to some leadership changes in the House and Senate.

Okay maybe that's my bad and I didn't understand what point of the post people were mad at exactly. Because those are fair criticisms for sure.
Trump for sure made the situation worse, and getting him out of office is a big victory.
My point was more that IMO Trump was the symptom of years of issues with U.S. politics, and this victory was the first step, but now IMO the real battle in the U.S. begins. The need for meaningful change in terms of voting rights, electoral process....hell general human rights in some cases, needs to be a priority for the next 4 years.

Sadly, large-scale societal change is not likely to happen with Moscow Mitch and his band of turdburglars running interference on every play.

This win doesn't change the fact that over 70M people still voted and supported that horrible human.
This win doesn't silence voices like Mitch McConnell that are still too prevalent in U.S politics and are spouting many of the same things that Trump did.
This win doesn't change the years of discrimination and structural racisim that has placed minorities in the US.
This win doesn't suddenly solve the issues with law enforcement and police reform in the U.S.
ETC, ETC
Should it be celebrated? 100% because it's still a big win.
But this needs to be seem as the first step to uniting and improving the United States, not the final victory. If people don't want this to happen again then they need to keep working and protesting for voting reform, etc over the next 4 years.
|
Not to mention Biden and the democrats actually need to do something over the next two years or they'll lose the next election. I can't believe all of the people already excusing Biden for doing nothing and blaming Mitch McConnell. If they don't meaningfully improve people's lives in the next two years they deserve to lose.
Why did 70 million people vote for Trump? Saying things like "they vote against their self interest" and "they're stupid" is lazy and only designed to comfort the people saying this stuff. Democrats haven't looked out for working class people in 50 years and they know it.
Anyway, I keep writing and deleting things, which means I'm ranting, so I'd better stop and actually work. Plus I'm sure this thread has moved on by now.

Not sure I'd call this close to a landslide. In recent history, Reagan-Carter, Reagan-Mondale, Bush-Dukakis, Clinton-Dole, Obama-McCain, Obama-Romney were all bigger spreads. Some of those, like Reagan-Mondale were absolute landslides.
But this is the worst showing for a sitting President since Bush 41, which was a weird election with the Perot factor.
I think this goes down in history as the Trump election, losing to a rather bland establishment candidate who didn't make any mistakes. And what will be most memorable is the counting of mail-in ballots which extended the drama over three days.
Most people I know are breathing a sigh of relief today and are now hoping that decorum will start to return to the conversation and the political landscape. The old divisions remains and ideology wise, I don't believe much has changed.
The stock market is banking on a GOP controlled senate which should help moderate the governing Democrats. Personally, that is about what I was hoping for.
