We need to start building out future third and fourth lines. We don't need more exclusively top six types.
We have too many 3rd and 4th line types in the system as is.
We have Reinhart, Ferland, Bouma, Colborne, Knight, Hanowski, Harrison and a few others.
The main area we lack is the highest end skill guys. We only have Gaudreau and Monahan that are in that upper tier. Baertschi, Poirier, Granlund, Janko, and Klimchuk could join them, but we still have to wait and see.

Sorry my last post got cut off while posting from my phone.
Also meant to add, really don't want any part of any guys that were projected to go 1st round and now are projected mid round picks unless there are major injuries involved.
Means the scouts found huge glaring holes in their game and the prospect did nothing or could do nothing to fix them, .
What do you think of Blake Clarke? Was projected to go top 5 but injuries ruined his last year.

Think he might be a guy who caught lightning in a bottle in 2012-13. Wasn't good enough for his USHL team and then took the OHL by storm, followed it by a very bad season on two different teams.
Would have to have the doctors analyze his injury, but you would pretty much be gambling on what prospect you are getting.

I'm not saying use first round pics. But second an third rounders.
Colbourne is a top six type. Ferland, hanowski, knight are all still question marks to even play in the show as regulars.
Max Reinhart could be a third line centre.
I think Poirier will probably end up as a third liner.
I love Paul Byron as a third line energy type.
But we need guys like lance bouma for the fourth line. Guys like Brandon Prust. Jordan Nolan on LA. They can fight, hit, block shots an chip in offensively. I think for our forward prospects it's out biggest weakness (only Ferland really).
We have a ton of small top six forwards that are going to need protection. Klimchuk, Monahan, Gaudreau, our first this year, bartschi, granlund. Those are pretty much all of out best prospects. So the fact some say we need to draft more small forwards early just doesn't make sense.
What do you think about a few Calgary kids in the 2nd round with D Brycen Martin and F Brayden Point?
I know Point is small but he's really skilled, could make Sven expendable for some D help?
He's either 5'8" or 5'9", depending which site you use. Unless he's better than Johnny Hockey and thus makes him trade bait, which he's not, then it's a big fat no. Enough with the sub 5'11" guys, and even at that height they better be supremely skilled. We already have too many small to average guys in the system, and by average I mean 6'-6'1".

What better position could we be in to gamble, considering we have 5 picks in the first 90? Swing for the fences with 1 pick, and do BPA & safest picks for the rest.
I would either gamble on Blake or on Tryamkin (a gamble because he's already successful in the KHL.)
I also like the look of Alexis Vanier. Huge, bruising defenceman with a bomb from the blue line on the power play. He had 15 goals this season and was a +11. If our development guys could improve his skating he might be a total sleeper pick.
I really like the look of some of these kids in rounds 2 & 3. Thanks Colorado & Pittsburgh!

Just curious to know where your cut-off is for "small"? If it's weight, most of those guys can/will fill out. The names mentioned cover a large range of weights from 150 to 190.
The one thing I do like about this draft is that after the top 20, the calibre of defense prospects are about equivalent to the forward prospects. Some years you have better players at one position or the other. Usually that means the better guys in the stronger group are all gone by 50, but because this is a balanced draft, and most teams need forwards more than D, we might be able to get better D-men prospects at 50ish + 64.
We definitely will have some intriguing players to choose from.

It's just we have very few prospects with the skill, size and snarl. Backlund, Klimchuk, bartschi, Gaudreau, colbourne, Monahan, granlund. Those guys aren't physical. It's an element lacking in our forward prospects that are likely to make the NHL.

Backlund is a top 6 center. He should be at the #2 center position, but he is #1 as of now until Sean or someone else (maybe Benett or Reinhart) can take the role of #1.

True, but that is one of the "easier" things to address, and it doesn't need to be done right now, especially when we have a huge hole on the defense.
By easier, you can find bigger nasty guys like Tim Harrison in the 6th round (6-3, fast and hits everything that moves), or Matt Martin (Isles player, taken in the 5th also hits everything). It's one of those things that if you can find guys like that in the deeper part of the draft each year, as we eventually lose guys, we will have fresh troops to fill those spots. Sort of like how the Hawks lost Bolland and Andrew Shaw stepped right into that void in their depth chart.
