Not just rogers and bell.

Almost any corporate entity in the radio business. Chorus media (Shaw) did the same.

Radio was better run as independent being paid for by sponsorship that was allowed to advertise what they want.

If Boomer is starting his own show, that will be great. But I am surprised that Rogers didn't have him sign a non-compete agreement barring him to do a sport show for a while...

Are those that common in any field anymore? Aren’t they difficult to enforce in the first place because they limit a human’s ability to you know…work and make a living?

I thought Boomer quit, which (if accurate) SN would have no say on what he did next.

They are still very commonplace in media. However, it does not apply to Boomer; he chose to leave.

Stephen Brunt is getting a little older, but if I’m sportsnet looking to cut staff, he’s the last guy I would make feel unwelcome. Brunt is elite

Boomer and….Brunt? Unlikely I know, but they seemed to have a great relationship after hearing Brunt call in on Boomer’s last day.

I think I read something from someone on CP that non compete clauses were mostly not worth the paper they're written on. Can't remember the details of the post though.

Brunt can now likely work at his own pace and pick and choose what he does. I could see him doing a regular weekly appearance on shows or podcasts but I don't know if he would be looking for full time stuff.

You can choose to not listen but if everyone does that the show will go away and this thread will be full of people lamenting that Calgary doesn't have a sports station. A sports station is better than no sports station so I will keep listening and try not to be overly critical of people that are getting treated like crap by their employer and doing their best to deliver a sports talk radio to Calgarians.

With what's on the air I'd say Calgary already doesn't have a morning sports show. I'll listen to Steinberg in the afternoon and look forward to Boomers podcast.

Yea the morning show (which is arguably supposed to be the big draw) is laughable at this point.

If they spent 1/8th the time talking about the Flames, or Calgary sports teams than they do talking about their next terrible sports betting picks we'd be miles ahead.

Just goes to show you what losing a guy like Boomer does to the CGY morning sports radio, what a gong show.

i thought a few weeks ago someone in this thread mentioend they hired someone from the east for the morning show.

one would think that new hire would want to be on the air by october 1 or so when the sports scene is at it's busiest.

I thought that too, but now I completely disagree. But depends on job, location, and under what type of terms/contract you left. California and certain job levels it definitely applies. I'm pretty sure a non compete contract is valid anywhere if you received a payout upon leaving. If Rogers wasn't willing to give Boomer a severance, then he is a free agent.

That's correct. And it's not Nick Alberga.

Come next month, most of the content other than the morning show and Flames Talk will be national programming. Sportsnet Today is not returning on a local level.

Nick Alberga is surprisingly refined on the radio. Not a lot of ums or ahs; he has the ability to string a sentence together coherently.

However he seems to be strictly a hockey guy and doesn't have great knowledge of anything outside that.

I don't spend a lot of time in my car, but I found myself driving around a lot last week and attempted to tune in two or three times. Every time I tuned to 960 it was unlistenable, either Jim Rome or some other out-of-town production, I immediately turned it off.

I have to say that I really appreciated Nick Alberga on the air.

I suspect that the improved quality of guest was largely in part due to his influence. I also appreciated some of his personal takes (especially the gym rants) as those resonated with me.

I'd be quite ok if he played a permanent part (even though its already been mentioned that it won't be him). He did help make for a lighter morning than what Will brought.
