Chia is a great analyst and kind of a therapist...

Word is Frank Seravalli will be updating his trade bait board this week and Laine and Ehlers will both be on it.

In the vein of Tobias Funke?
I know everyone wants Barkov but Chia latches on to his all star forwards and gives them big money. It's Ekblad we should target, Chia won't have any idea how to value him correctly.

Ehlers really got under my skin in the series against the Flames. So I can only presume I'd like him on my team...
Ehlers for Hamonic's rights

Seeing Hamonic's name brings up an interesting point (and yes I get that it was said sarcastically) but has Hamonic essentially retired?
He chose not to play in the tournament due to the circumstances ongoing and in the best interest's of his child. The upcoming season, likely to be played out in home arenas with travel would probably be riskier than the bubble. If he turned that down, the odds are high he won't be comfortable playing the upcoming season and therefore likely not to sign anywhere.

Maybe Hamonic just takes a break for a year.

I think the second side of Hamonic not returning had to do with the fact he's in a contract year after a lengthy break and he didn't feel like risking anything. (cant say I blame him)
He's likely on his last contract and with almost 0% chance he returns to Calgary so he felt it was in his best interest to just stay home. I don't think he's retiring or done just because of COVID.

Domi is definitely available for trade from everything I'm reading. If Calgary brought him in to be a C, where would he play? Mony, Backs, Bennett, Ryan doesn't leave much room for a top 6 C. Yes, Domi can play the wing but he is best when at center and using his speed. If you trade Monahan for futures you could make it work I guess but is Domi the guy you want replacing Monahan? I could see it working to shake up the core but I'm not sure that's the wise move to make here.

Domi and Bennett up the middle...I don't know if the Flames would be better, but they'd be faster and more feisty with their C core that's for sure. Backlund can skate pretty good too.
Yeah, if they added Domi and plan to keep Bennett and play him at C, plus Backlund has a full NTC, I'd say that would leave Monahan as the odd man out potentially. Probably either trade for futures or a top pairing/young top 4 Dman maybe?
Still no true #1C though if they went that route. Faster team though, with more edge.
Personally I don't care, just as long as they're a sustainably winning team.

I dunno.
After next season the Flames would have to extend Laine, probably for $9 million AAV or more, then the next off season Forsberg is a UFA and Tkachuk is an RFA with a $9 million QO. These guys are all wingers and if extended would be the 3 highest paid forwards...
The C depth would be Bennett, Backlund, ....., and, ......
You must be in the "Lindholm to C" crowd?

Yeah, there's no way I'm moving Monahan or Gaudreau without the focus being on getting improvements on Monahan at centre.
...which means high end, top-10 draft picks.
If you move those two players and aren't focusing in on upgrading the centre ice position, you're just shuffling deck chairs again. No point in moving those players unless you're looking at changing the structure of the team.

People who think Monahan is a one dimensional goal scoring forward would really throw a bird about Laine lol.

Yes, definitely in the move Lindholm to C camp if Monahan is dealt. I'd rather deal Gaudreau vs Monahan, but Laine is a talent that I would deal Monahan for.
Forsberg and Gaudreau's contracts are similar and expire at the same time. Just feel like Forsberg is more of what we could use. I don't think Winnipeg does that first deal anyway without another add from our end. They would look at it though as they desperately need a 2nd C behind Scheifele.
I want to keep Bennett as the 3C for the whole season next year to give him a fair chance to show everyone if he can produce.
Backlund is obviously a staple at C. Since we can't move him down with Bennett there, he has to be the 2C.

I don't disagree, but the problem is that No.1 C's aren't available anywhere.
Getting top 10 picks doesn't guarantee a 1C either...... Unless there is an appetite for a Ryan Johansen type C to replace Monahan? They bring completely different things to the table.
Monahan + Gaudreau + Ryan
for
Ryan Johansen (1.5MM retained) + Forsberg + Jarnkrok

The downgrade from Jarnkrok to Ryan is just far too much to justify the other two swaps from Nashville. Especially with still two seasons on his 2M contract. Calgary would do it, Nashville would only do it if they were forced to make a big change (which they might be after this season post-season).

Ryan Johansen is overpaid and has questions about his GAF meter sometimes, but I don't mind him on the Flames to be honest. Right hand shot, good on face offs, decent two way play, good size, lots of skill. Not a goal scorer, but a good puck distributor. He'd look pretty good centering Tkachuk and Mangiapane IMO.

Monahan > Johansen
Gaudreau > Forsberg
These are "change for the sake of change" trades, bad route to take.
But yeah, there are no guarantees in the draft but it's your only actual shot to do it. So you either maintain the risk that this past season's drop in performance and production is a one off, or you take the risk of drafting and developing someone potentially better.
Trading Gaudreau and Monahan for wingers, or worse players (like Johansen) is just change for the sake of change. There's no vision there. No road to improvement.
I think this team either needs to add to the team while not subtracting from the core, or rebuild. Anything else - any type of "hockey trade" is just going to either maintain the level of mediocrity or make the team worse.

The only way you move Monahan is for an upgrade, which is unlikely to happen. If we want to improve center depth, the easier solution might be to move Lindholm to C in addition to Monahan, not to replace him, otherwise we're in exactly the same position down the middle.
