Correct. David Staples refuses to leave his basement & actually report, so Marc gets to hold off Jim Matheson to keep his championship belt.

Wrong Leafs owner.
If they ever name an award after Harold Ballard, those jabronis will be right in the running.

Oilers with the dumbest trade of the draft...trading a future first for the 32nd pick
Less deadline ammo and almost certainly moving a better pick in a deeper draft

Not using next year's first on a player in their short window is mindnumbingly dumb.

That.... is a very good point. They don't need a 32nd overall pick who might be a replacement-level player in 3 years. They need trade ammo to load up for what will (truly) be the cup or bust year. What were they thinking?

a million a year gone! it's not a bad deal but it's a raise.
Picard reported to have signed a 2 year $2 million contract with an AAV of $1 million.
it's a raise from the previous 2 year $1.525 million contract with an AAV of $762,500.

Yes..this trade was crazy sauce. I like the guy they picked...but they needed to use the future picks for the here and now.

This year was their shot. They won't get there again.

The funniest thing is if the Oilers some how finish in the bottom 12 next year, they instantly become very likely to finish poorly the following year, as there is no way McDavid/Drasaitl don't walk from a bottom 12 Edmonton, and they don't have a team, they have a few individual high end performers and some dumb luck. So the slide protection they put in place virtually guarantees the 26 pick would be a good one, in the event that the condition applies.

I would love to see the Flames obtain that pick from the Flyers.

Wait…. If someone woke up from a long sleep. Saw that McDavid won the Conn Smythe and they picked 32 overall who would they have assumed won the cup ?

Watch them shove him in their lineup next year because of his cheap ELC.

I honestly cannot believe they traded their first round pick next year for the last pick in the first round of this draft. And the conditions on it aren’t even that great… I figured it would be something like if they finished in the bottom 10 in the league, the pick would become a 2nd round pick. But no… instead, it would become an unprotected first round pick in 2026.
This trade could hurt the oilers for years to come. As early as next year in can hurt them. They now can only offer their 2026 pick if they want to bolster their lineup at the trade deadline. And that pick could be a really good pick… especially if draisaitl leaves. And if they put any protection on that 2026 pick, it would likely push the pick to be an unprotected first round pick in 2027 which could potentially be the first year the oilers play after losing McDavid - likely a lottery pick in that scenario.

Can't wait to see how Edmonton media spin this:
"Look at this brilliant move! They are one goal away from the Stanley Cup, yet find a way to get into the first round in the draft and improve their organization even more! This is a brilliant pick, and this kid was an absolute steal! Oilers probably with the biggest coup in the draft!"

It’s beautiful. Obviously they are reading their press clipping believe they’re on an unstoppable train to glory.
It’s interesting in this draft how apparently after the 3rd-4th rounds the talent falls off. Oilers picks are basically now all round 5-7. Sound like it is pretty much the same as inviting players to development camp.
