I'm not in China, so I basically use it as little as possible just to keep certain extended family happy in being kept up to date on their mundane boring ass life. If I lived in regional China, I would assume it's a royal pain if I don't use it.

I'm merely saying that an app where you don't have to remember as many passwords, has it's own two-factor authentication built in and a great firewall of China that protects majority of users from garden variety fraud.

In the end, someone ends up with your info anyways... I can see why those that use the app to the highest levels are willing to blindly gift their data to China in the same way as many people in North America basically gift it to Apple, Google, Meta, Amazon etc. The convenience outweighs the inconvenience and risks related to your data.

I know those ####ers are listening in on me to sell me ####. Recommended stuff I've never looked into before in my life shows up after casual conversations beside my cell phone or listening devices in my home. But that's the worst those I gift my data can do to me... bombard me with advertisements to sell me stuff I don't need.

I'm not for certain, but don't a lot of video games or apps already have this from us? We just kinda trust them more.

I agree I don't want my info in Musk's hands or China's hands as much as possible... but depending on the convenience to me going forward, I sadly don't think it's a hill I die on. Give me a decent enough incentive on a Tesla (and I don't think it has to exceed $10K) and they can have my data and force me sign me up for X in its entirety for the OTA updates. Just don't make it complicated as F to do it.

And I think that's a similar mindset of those in China using WeChat.

If Musk decided to try and create an integrated platform on Twitter/X in a manner similar to WeChat and make a ton of money off of it. I sadly think he'd be successful.

Musk doesn't come across as the kind of guy who bothers to check any #### like that. He just does what he wants. Probably figures if he's adamant enough Microsoft would just sell him the trademark, or he's petty enough to drag it out in court to get his way.

Phhhffftt...Microsoft is just the 2nd biggest tech company in the world. I'm sure they have no idea how to defend their IP.

I haven't been able to find confirmation of this, so grain of salt and all that, but I read Microsoft's trademark for "X" was related to its now-defunct Mixer livestreaming service...which was acquired by Meta.

He's potentially getting into a major battle with both Facebook and Microsoft for the trademark "X"....lol

Not that they don't know how, but Musky is usually super-belligerent and petulant, so he might just try to brute-force his way into getting the trademark from Meta/Microsoft.

This is what happens when you fire all the experts at your company, and don't have a board to check your impulsiveness.

He'll be employing more lawyers than coders by the time the year is out.

I’m getting tons of PMs from the silent majority and, hate to say it, but even they think Elon is a big idiot for this one.

I mentioned before that somebody I work with quit twitter in may, after 8 years. He told me that the company doesn't even have basic respect for engineers anymore. It's not surprising after the news but still. Ouch.
