Russian Olive are also an invasive species or close to one. I realize that you can buy them at nurseries and people love them, but they can crowd out native trees over time.

So we lost our small 12' mountain ash a few years ago, likely due to black rot. now it's just a dead tree with deteriorating branches holding up some Christmas lights. I'd like to replace it with a different tree. Do I need to grind out the roots of the old one first? Or could I plant a new one beside it? Additionally, what would be a good tree in a spot that gets sun pretty much all day?

I used College Waterworks, not ultra cheap, but fast, accessible and knew what they were doing.

Anyone know someone on the east side of the city that's good for sprinklers? Mine seem to have a problem.

How much does an irrigation system typically cost to have professionally installed?

Mountain ash grows by seeds in the fruit or by root suckers. You don't have to grind the stump.
Elm or green ash would be a good choice for a shade tree. Depends on what form you prefer.

I need to get rid of some dirt. About 2 pickup truck loads worth.
Last year I took 6 tons of rock and cement to "Calgary Aggregate Recycling" on 94th Ave. SE. Free of charge, quick and easy to unload, friendly people too. But they do not accept dirt, only gravel.
City of Calgary landfill is out of the question, they're expensive as hell. Anyone need some fill or know where I can get rid of this dirt?
Thanks!

I completely spaced on what is considered clean fill. Last year I had chunks of wood and some grass in my trailer load of dirt and was charged almost $100 by the landfill. I guess I was a bit pissed off and completely ruled out the city. But yes, the dirt I have will be considered "clean".
Glad I asked, thanks!

Finally had a couple of dry days in a row so I could get the garden tilled.

I have, what looks like a balsam poplar that has sprouted up very quickly along our fence line. I am not really sure how it got there (did I plant it from some old Arbor Day plant thing my kids brought home?). Anyway, it's about 7 or 8 feet in height. Should I keep it, or will it cause problems?

It seems to be causing double-posts - I'd chop it down.

I just had a guy here regrade a chunk of my property, and now I need to plant some seed. Any suggestions? I've got about an acre to seed. Anyone try this sheep fescue stuff? Also, this part of the property will primarily be used for kids running around, playing soccer, etc. Grass needs to be hardy.

I got a few pieces of sod to fill in a patch in my backyard. How many days do I need to do the daily watering thing?

What does it cost to have an underground watering system installed vs. doing it yourself? Looking at doing a normal suburban 52ft xt 140ft lot with a house on it, wondering if the cost savings are worth doing it myself
