Just look at that rendering. There is perfect uniformity of illumination. But where is it lit from? A point source just does not have the ability to create that look. Also, the vertical illumination is outstanding in the rendering. LEDs don't have a prayer when it comes to providing that kind of a finished look.
Also, with the LED's weak lumen to watt ratio, there's no way you could possibly find enough source locations to provide that kind of horizontal illuminance all the way across the bridge. It looks to me like the lighting will be mounted along the centre ceiling. Trust me when I say that if you tried to light that tunnel with a strip of LED lighting along the centre the lighting would be awful. You wouldn't want to be biking, that's for sure.

I guess I should have qualified it a bit. I'm not looking to extend it 20 meters, just maybe a meter or two so it doesn't feel like its about to fall off the edge. Not a huge deal though, extending it would cause precious tax payer dollars to be wasted anyway.

My guess is that the bridge will be supported on either end by two massive vertical columns sitting underground on either side of the river, which would then both be connected to the bridges' structural braces. Past that, I'm not quite sure how to strengthen the bridges without these vertical support columns.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
And now if you don't like it, deal with it - it's here to stay. And I'm definitely all for it, as are quite a few other Calgarians on the matter.

Huh? I am referring to the old cement monster bridge on Crowchild that goes to McMahon.
I like the new bridge very much.

Why?
Is the only thing to consider when buying a house is how it looks on the outside?

I think it looks like there should be a giant slurpee cup on one end. Not a big fan of the coloring scheme, all white would be my preference but whatever.

I wonder how much that opinion would change if we were still in a big boom instead of a recession.

So when you go to Egypt, you don't check out the pyramids? When you go to NY, you don't go up the Empire State Building or Rockefeller Center? When you are in Paris, you don't glance at the Eiffel Tower? The Colosseum in Rome? Great Wall of China? Sydney Opera House?
Architecture is one of the top reasons why people travel. The vast majority of attractions in the world is some form of building structure. How can you say you don't find beauty in architecture? Beauty IS architecture!

Red, in most cases, is an awesome colour. Red, in this case, is hideous.
This bridge is the architectural equivalent of an attention whore.
"Hey! Over here! Yo! Look at me!! LOOK AT MEEEEEE!!@!!!"

When I was in Egypt I thought it was cool to think about how the Pyramids were built and was more impressed with the sheer size of them, but I didn't find them "beautiful". It was more the engineering aspect that went into building them than the actual look of them. If they were built today I wouldn't be impressed with them at all.
The same is true with the Colliseum. It was cool to see how old it was and to think that they built it so long ago but it was "beautiful" to look at.
I think the Eiffel Tower is pretty ugly, but again the size of it is impressive and pretty cool.
The Empire State Building was cool because of its height but it isn't that beautiful to look at on its own. I wasn't that impressed with Rockefeller Center at all.
Haven't been to China to comment on the Great Wall but in pictures it again seems cool because of its size/age not because it looks beautiful.
I think the Sydney Opera House looks pretty stupid so don't consider it beautiful at all.
For me it is the historical aspects of these structures that make them cool not the architecture.

So why chime in then? It's a new bridge so you're destined to think it's 'stupid' anyway.
Seems to me like this project was destined to be hated by a lot of people no matter what the design/color/etc...

I think it looks pretty cool. It looks clean and sharp, plus I think it is pretty neat that there is no columns in the river at all. I would love to see an areal photo of where it is gonna be.
Hopefully this design presses the arch. chosen to design the second bridge to think out side of the box.
Maybe we should set up a poll on this one?
