From Lebrun:

Quote:
Vancouver obviously heard from a whole host of teams, but according to league sources, in the end, the Canucks got serious trade offers from six clubs.
The New Jersey Devils, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers are among those six teams confirmed to have made legitimate offers. The Devils feel they made a strong first offer. I can also confirm that the Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes showed interest.
The Philadelphia Flyers were among the teams that kicked tires but didn’t get to the next level. The Flyers weren’t willing to give up the assets the Canucks wanted, so that took Philadelphia out of being a major player in it.
Despite rumors to the contrary, my understanding is that the Washington Capitals were never real players in it. The Caps would not have wanted or been willing to move the kind of pieces it would have taken. Didn’t make sense for them. (Also, they really love Cole Hutson.)
In the end, Minnesota came at it strongest.
|
Quote:
Teams that were involved obviously wanted some kind of sign from Brisson about the likelihood of Hughes extending, but the reality is that the veteran agent couldn’t commit to that with any of the teams, including Minnesota.
“We were looking for a fit where hopefully Quinn will have a tremendous hockey experience and reevaluate from there whether he will extend or not,” Brisson said. “But I wasn’t able to guarantee to any of the teams whether he would sign or not.”
Which is to say, Brisson strongly denied that there’s any side deal involved with Minnesota ahead of July 1, when Hughes is allowed to sign a year out from his current deal expiring. Brisson said Hughes will decide at some point if he likes it in Minnesota and wants to stay long-term.

I do wonder if on July 1st if Hughes indicates he won't re-sign with the Wild, we reach another Rantanen type situation.
Maybe the Wild can do a sign and trade to recoup what they lost.

No Canadian teams invovled for obvious reasons...geography is becoming more of an issue in the NHL

I think that depends how close they get this year.

If the Wild were in any other division I would like their chances a lot better...I hate the NHL playoff format

Arguably the 3 best teams in the west in the same division and if the oilers can grab a divisional spot will probably cake walk to the conference finals again and face a team that's been through a gauntlet already.

It is not 'by design' to make them worse. They had NO CHOICE that it would make them worse, because they were trading away one of the league's elite players.

Wasn't Rantanen a pending UFA versus Hughes who has more term?

You are cherry picking 2 quotes. I have also said in the past I watched several Parekh games last year in person and thought he had the potential to be a game changer.
Nothing is set in stone though and he struggled this year, although wasn't given much of a chance with the coaching.

I wasn't saying Andersson is equivalent to Hughes. I'm saying the Wild could have solidified their defense for a lot less. And by solidified I don't just mean right now, I mean long term. But who knows, maybe Hughes extends in Minnesota next season.
That being said, Hughes this season has been a far cry from the game changer he's been in previous seasons. A change of scenery might be all he needs, but what if it isn't? What if The Wild gave up all these assets for a guy who still isn't feeling it? I suspect Hughes will bounce back, presuming recent injuries don't slow him down. But it is a huge risk the Wild are taking here.
This return has also likely increased Andersson's trade value considerably. Arguably more than even the Lindholm return. Interesting to see all the teams vying for Hughes, those are all likely talking to Conroy now.

Scoring points playing d for the Flames, especailly early this season was near impossible. When the forwards don't score dmen don't get points.
Vs. playing on the PP with Karpizov...think of their PP now

It will be interesting to see if the Canucks can indeed go full scorched earth rebuild. They are still right at the cap, technically over because they are dipping into LTIR. Most of their highest paid players are locked in on big contracts with player control, so getting full value for them might not be possible.
Edit, I was wrong, they are not into the LTIR at the moment, but they are projected to be over the cap by the end of the season without more changes.

They also just do not have many players that have much value. If you are looking for a 50 point winger locked down for 7.25 million longterm they have Boeser.
If you are looking for a 40-50 point winger locked down longterm for 6 million a year they have Garland locked down longterm.
DeBrusk gives you that 40-45 point winger if you are looking for it for 5.5 million longterm.
Pettersson looks like he could be a 60-70 point center for 11.6 million.
Not sure what their assets are that they could trade.

Probably their most tradable guy at the moment is Sherwood.

Buium had the highest draft year NHLe of any of these players, but has also had the least progression, since his draft year, based on NHLe. I am not suggesting NHLe is the be all, end all, but if you're going to use it to compare one year, keep going. And the perspective changes substantially.
|
Obviously its very early still so you can't really read too much into it, but it is less then ideal that Parehks d+2 isn't shipping up into the same stratosphere as these other guys.

There are barely any players left in the NHL that were even born the last time a Canadian team won the Stanley Cup. Hughes is right to want to leave Canada, and I applaud him for his ambition. Just look at McDavid, he's the best player in the league since Lemieux retired, and he's wasting his career up here.
