They should have known whether he could comfortably kick through the end zone. Seems weird that they didn't know that.

But why not just kick out of bounds? Difference of only 5 yards.

Onside kicks without the element of surprise are almost impossible, around 6%. I'd rather have the ball with 50+ seconds or so, even if I'm going the length of the field.

The Broncos announced they're staying in Denver (there'd been talk of moving to the suburbs) and building a fully retractable roof stadium just outside of downtown. It will also be 100% privately funded, no new taxes. Guess having the richest owner in the league has some benefits

The Great Value Dome @ Mile High does have a nice ring to it.

It's a ways away from being a done deal. They're talking about having it done in time for 2031.

Shockingly the league has said his ejection was sufficient as a suspension. Time served and he's back for week 2. I really thought they'd execute him live at halftime but sometimes the bad guy gets away with it

A touchback is the same as kicking it through the end zone.

I doubt Chicago expected Minny to run it out.

IMO they made the right play.

Off to Lambeau Field for the Packers and Commanders Thursday game. Looking forward to seeing the stadium.

If your kicker can't get it through the end zone...kick it out of bounds. Its a difference of 5 yards now.

Either way, Williams, who has the body language and seemingly GAS level of sad Eeyore, when things aren’t going well, wasn’t coming back even if he had the 40 more seconds.

Last year it was a rookie defensive coach’s fault. This year he has the leagues supposedly best OC as a coach.

With the option of making the Bears rekick, no?

Even Minnesota didn't know that they were going to run it out. A player wouldn't have to look at the bench if that was their plan going into the kickoff.

Kickoff is a dead ball play so even if the Vikings made the Bears re-kick forever the clock would never move if they kept kicking it out of bounds. Would be some good comedy to see that stretched to a five hour game just to see the Bears keep kicking it OB. And if the Vikings didn't know with 2:02 left on the clock whether to run it out or not that's not good. Literally the Bears only meaningful hope is to have a kickoff with one second or less going off the clock, O'Connell should be telling them that before the kickoff.

Yeah I'm not clear why O'Connell didn't instruct the returner prior to the kickoff to return the kick. The situation wasn't really that complicated. NFL coaches have long struggled with clock management through.

Eberflus wasn't a rookie head coach. Last year was a culmination in the staff ruining a top pick, and to be honest it was the truth.

Chicago has Ben now, and his tenure will outlast Caleb's if it comes down to it. As dissapointing as MNF was, there's got to be a bit of time for a rookie HC and 2nd year QB to gel a bit. Media is going nuclear in week 1. Realistically an 8-9 win season should be seen as a success.

Is there a rule where if you committ the same foul intentionally multiple times where they eventually interject and do a run off?

The Patriots used to take delay of games outside 5 minutes because it would restart the clock. Every penalty and restart was a chance to run more time off the clock. But I think the league eventually changed the rule to stop this.

I wonder if he instructed the returner to look at him. You can see in the replay the returner went looking for him. Maybe they do that all the time but it might have been the instruction.

That's in fact what it looks like but the question is what was the other option that O'Connell was considering that the returner had to check before running out of the end zone?
