Either way, it is depressing that my team has taken over the place of the late, Coyotes, as the graveyard of cap burials.
Nope, first pick in the 3rd round

The challenge with Necas though is they only get 1 more year of him. He has been very clear that he's going to go to UFA.
That was when he was in Carolina and had been asking for a trade for years. I don't think that is necessarily true now.

Necas in, Rantanen out.
Drury in.

Not Phaneuf for Stajan and spare parts, but still a head scratcher.
They were losing Rantanen as a UFA, they got Necas for an extra year, and perhaps more.

Better team for this year, that was likely not going to happen and was not the goal. But better next year than they would have been if they simply lost Rantanen for nothing.

Don't forget that they would have cap space if they did lose Raantenen to go find a replacement as a UFA or trade to absorb cap. If Drury was a Flame you would be telling everyone that he's deadweight with negative value nothing burger.

Colorado is still an attractive team so getting players to sign there is not a big issue. They would find a way to use the new cap space to add another higher end player or two.

I think they ultimately decided that they're falling further from being a cup contender than getting closer these past two and a half seasons. They miss the player that Landeskog was a lot and the depth that had. So they're willing to change up the team now thinking that as is with s big three they're no better than last year. If they really thought internally that they had a shot at winning the cup with this roster I don't think they make this deal. So as is they're not a contender in their own eyes and they stand to lose the player. So it is a pragmatic move on their part to do this. Smarter than I initially gave it credit for even if zi think it makes them step back this year.

Rantanen is doing his best Huberdeau impression. 1 point in 6 games

2 points, actually. But people need to relax. It's been 6 games. Sometimes it takes time to gel with new linemates, especially when you're used to playing with MacKinnon. Maybe he struggles the rest of the season, maybe he picks it up, but it's far too early to declare anything.

He will still get paid but it’s a bad look that Necas has 9 points in 8 games. For a guy the priced himself out of Colorado he better pick it up.

Good thing Carolina has like 27 games left to see if he can figure it out. People judge trades way too quickly. Is the Frost/Farabee trade a bust because they've combined for 2 goals in 8 games?

Maybe, key is will he resign?

Would not be surprised if he was moved again before the dead-line

I think Carolina keeps him for their playoff run either way. They’d get a fraction of what they gave up up to get him if he struggles to produce.

Kypreos was talking about how he thinks Carolina would consider trading him if things don’t get better, not wanting a repeat of Guentzel

Maybe not.

He’s getting $13M no matter what.

So while technically yea, maybe it’s costing him millions, it’s nothing that won’t get made up within a couple years.

I'm not so sure 13x7 is a guarantee for him.
If he has a terrible showing in Carolina i can see GMs having some serious trepiditions about giving him that kind of money/term.

Some might. At least 1 will pay him, though. And it only takes 1.

Maybe Rantanen doesn't bounce back, but slow production when joining a new team isn't out of the ordinary.
