Good for you....because I couldnt!

Because its a sham.

Honestly, this comes across to me as nothing but an insipidly obvious and shameless cash-grab to boost HRR and thus the Cap and the PA agreed to it partially because it egregiously favours it's Star Players and now they have to provide a 'give-back' to bump the Cap up which isn't going to matter because the high-end stars are going to gobble up that difference like Hungry-Hungry-Hippos anyways.

I will probably follow the results through the occasional headline, and/or discussion threads here. Doubt I'll tune in to a single game.

Somewhere in between and closer to the All-Star game than the Olympics, IMO. Even if it is closer to the Olympics, I doubt there will be enough of a narrative built up to attract many viewers.

I'll bet the viewership is pretty high

Viewership might be ok, Mosty because the people not paying to go are just going to watch on TV.

LeBrun also saying Doughty is the likely replacement since he is due back in 3-5 days and if he feels good he is the guy.

I think they will go with Tanev. Pieterangelo was on the team for his defense and Tanev is a better replacement from that perspective.

If you're not watching you're missing out. It'll be best-on-best. Once you put national colors on (not all-star colors) you can't help but go full speed.

Plus fringe players will try to make the Olympic team next year.

It's a shame that when it comes to international hockey we're left with a scenario where we either get a 4 nations type format with limited teams that'll feel like an all-star game, or a super diluted playing field with many uninspiring lopsided results.

In any modern international tournament you (usually) have Canada, USA, Sweden, Finland, Slovakia, Czechia, Russia as locks. Then you have your teams like Germany, Switzerland, Latvia, Denmark who have made big strides in developing NHL players over the past 10-20 years - certainly still not at the level of the elite teams but have definitely earned their right to be there. Then you basically have the rest of the teams, where there's still a lot of work to be done but at least there's an interest. (ie: Norway, Kazakstan, France, Italy, Estonia etc.)

I genuinely don't know how feasible it is for these countries to make more strides in developing programs more competitive with the bigger teams given the current landscape of the sport, but I hope someone has the answers. Maybe some of those countries should look to teams like Germany and Switzerland for inspiration - because for me if we just had 3-4 more teams that could compete with the elite ones it would make things better.

I did see those articles from a few months ago creating hypothetical lineups with Canadian NHLers based on if IIHF eligibility rules were changed.. I'd probably be into something like that. I don't think we'd see any European countries unfairly becoming powerhouses, if anything it would just add more NHL players to the talent pool.

I know this is mainly just a bunch of waffling, just wanted to vent on how I wish international hockey could be slightly more interesting. I think a good starting point though would be to create a designated IIHF tournament separate from the olympics and just stick with it.

Apparently Daly has said the suspension policy for missing the All-Star Game will not come into effect for the 4 Nations.

Is Canada vs the USA going to be a worse game because Russia isn't there?

Sure, the eventual winner will be questioned a bit because Russia isn't there, but for every damn game you are watching the best from that country against the best from a different country. Each game will be great.

Probably a snoozer. Everyone knows WJC, IIHF World Championship, Olympics from a young age. No one grew up dreaming about 4 nations.

At any given Euro or World Cup in soccer, there are big teams that fail to qualify. Four time world champion Italy has now missed back-to-back World Cups. It happens; it doesn't lessen the prestige of the tournament.

4 nations tournament just doesn't have any prestige to begin with, so no one cares.

There still should be a team representing the Island of Misfit Toys!

Have a Canada2 and a Team Yahtzee...put all of the top players that otherwise arent participating and put their names in a Yahtzee Cup or one of those Bingo-Roller things and have them compete.

Hell...make their coaching position a fan lottery!

If you're going to have a gimmicky tournament dont half-ass it! Always whole-ass! Always! Really lean into it!
