Fitz, why are you on a Flames discussion board trying to drive down Markstrom's price when you have only hours to complete the trade for the elite goaltender (tops in the league in Goals Saved Above Expected) that you know you want and without whom your season is lost? Get off the damn board and get on the phone to Conroy, STAT!

Once again, 5 trades later and no lesson learned:
get hopes up, set expectations excessively high, get disappointed by return, begin to overrate return.
Happened 5 times now.

So many folks still bite. It’s fascinating. Engage the trolls, this is what you get. The internet (and newsgroups etc etc before that) is how old now? And it still works. A hardy Meh from me. As you were.

Have you seen the returns for Toffoli and Lindholm? How do we know that any of the rest won't also turn out well like those ones did?
Yes, posters on this site have a tendency to overreact when their fantasies don't turn into reality. But the reality is that the Flames are still winning in spite of all of the UFAs traded away, thanks in part to some of the younger players who came back the other way.

No doubt. Found his attempts at posting in the Devils forum on capfriendly. He posted about Mercer's next contract on Nov 1 and got his first, and only, reply on Dec 28.
With this much response he may never stop... at least until the trade happens or the Devils pack it in and Fitz gets fired for not going and finding a goalie solution.

I said for months to Calgary fans on cap friendly. Look at the comps. look at the comps. And shockingly it lined up exactly with the comps (frankly I even overestimated it at a devils comp of 1st+Bahl+3rd for 50% retention)
|
Yeah, the Flames did get way more than we thought possible in the Lindholm trade. I guess most of us were wrong about that. Also, the return on the Toffoli trade has also been amazing. You certainly know how to be an annoying person right from the start.
Also, don't worry about feeding this troll or not because it's the kind that doesn't shut up.

I still say dgibb10 is a plant from NJD trying to drive down Markstrom's price.
Good thing Conroy doesn't come to these boards for advice.

Cool.
Here's the thing though. I KNOW the returns aren't going to meet my fantasy hockey nerd dreams. Doesn't mean I'm going to stop enjoying thought trains about what my team to get when trading their players.
It's called having fun. This is fun. What's not fun is neggy Nellie's....wait, you like to be called "realists"...anyways, what's not fun is constantly being bombarded with lame posts by some outside poster of the community with some sort of ball busting attitude like you're doing the good Lord's work.
We have our own neggie nellies, we don't need more more. All full.

If I get banned for going against an echo chamber would be hilarious.
But some lessons:
1: always trust comps
2: term matters
3: Cap hit is king
4: learn about positional value
5: learn about the NHL age development curve
Mercer wasn't put on the table in negotiations for Meier, he wasn't offered in packages where Fitz was asking for Hanifin AND Markstrom.
Look to the montreal model on the prices of young NHLers as first time RFAs. Think about how much they paid for Newhook and Dach. That's the market. Then think about how many levels above mercer has been compared to those two.
Then look at every goalie trade ever. Heck even Dominick Hasek coming off 6 vezinas in 8 years didn't get as much as some people here think Markstrom will

God I love when fanbases fall for the "guy shooting significantly higher than his career shooting% in 1 year with 0 changes in his underlying numbers" mirage.

There are no comps for trading Markstrom right now. No goalie in the Vezina conversation of the current season has ever been traded at the trade deadline of that season with term still on their contract.
The rest of your 'lessons' fall on their face once you blow the punchline of your first bullet.
