I think the “big return” for Markstrom would come in the form of draft picks and prospects… not young roster players. I agree that the offer needs to be more than what we have typically seen for goalies in recent years. To me, that’s something like a 1st round pick + 2nd round pick + 3rd round pick… that’s a huge return for a goalie these days.

IMO they aren't saying it would take an offer that would blow the doors off only for it to be picks and prospects. I believe the rumor that Mercer or Nemec would come up in NJD as part of it.

These rumours were for Hanifin.

Thought I read yesterday that it was rumored NJD asked about Markstrom and Conroy brought up Mercer/Nemec and the Devils said that was too much. My mistake if that wasn't the case.

Possible someone that wrote it confused the two. Prior to the Markstrom rumor, Hanifin was rumored to NJ for a 1st and Mercer (with Conroy asking for Mercer). It was an assumption that this would have been for a signed Hanifin.
NJ does need a goalie though too.

That is a crazy ask. It does increase the likelihood that if one of the other UFAs are added to a deal, something really good could come out of Jersey.

Which is why New Jersey is sniffing around Minnesota and Fleury. Not going to cost Nemec or Mercer or anywhere close to that.

Thanks, but I would have to say that maybe James Nichols confused the two rumors. There is no way that is the asking price for Markstrom straight across.

Can we likewise give some stick taps to Dino for making us all much stupider over the same period?

Yes, because trying to keep things real and in line with historical precedence is killing hope and excitement around here. Good to know.

You're right, the Devils would probably have to add their 1st as well. I was not kidding in the least when I said massive overpay.

I’m with Lanny a bit on this one. Some of the offers on Markstrom proposed on here are through the roof. It’s fun to talk about but who pays the equivalent of two first rounders for a goalie who may or may not have rebounded? It’s funny but from Conroy saying he won’t trade him unless he gets an offer that blows off his socks, would probably be two first rounders from his point of view. Well, what GM would do that with his recent history? And if teams currently are calling up offering a first plus a bit is that not a good if not great offer? And why do we have to keep him? For what future if this a rebuilding team? I just find the whole thing odd. Don’t get me wrong, Conroy should shoot for the moon but IMO if you can get a first for someone with uncertainty, isn’t part of the long term when you’re ready to compete, and probably won’t have a higher value than now, you take it.

Well for Tofolli we got a younger, cheaper player with more points and a draft pick
Dare to dream

Depends on the team's thinking for next season.
Do they want to compete? Probably.
Do they trust Wolf to be the #1? Not yet.
So trading Markstrom means largely giving up this season and less chance of competing next season. So the price has to be worth it for that. And it probably isn't.
I realize that is counter to the desire for a full re-build, but we have no indication of the club doing that. So giving up their established #1 isn't easy. I suspect that the gap between the price they would need and what they can get is big. And won't be bridged.
