Why on earth would Hanifin extend here? It's a sinking ship. Why wouldn't he go UFA and sign with a team trending up?
If he does extend with the Flames, I would have to question what is in the office Kool aide.

So he only stays because Calgary pays him the most?
Then he can GTFO!

The knock against Bouwmeester when he was here was that he was a good defenceman who was being paid to be a great defenceman.
We traded for (and paid him to be) a Rob Blake, but what we got was... well... a Noah Hanifin.

Being on an awful team with awful stats might lower his next contract offers

I think that contract value is very fair for what Hanifin brings. He's a 40-50 point defensemen who plays both ways, jack of all trade, can move up and down the pairings and play big minutes. If the Flames sign him to that and all imploded, they've got a young asset controlled to then deal as needed.

The knock against Bouwmeester is similar to what I feel Treliving did wrong, a lot. At the time we had Dion, Regher, Leopold, Sarich, Gio, Aucoin, Pardy-time? Pretty high paid d corps.. and yet farmer boy decided we needed more D as opposed to skilled forwards. Such a joke, and I believe it upset the chemistry in the room in terms of ice time. Not to mention Bouwmeester at the time was such a strange cat he couldn't even formulate proper sentences in interviews
He was skilled don't get me wrong, and ended up being fine. But the results of that initial trade were horrible

Maybe I completely misevaluate the players, but I expect a $7M player to be able to occasionally dominate a game. When was the last time Hanifin really looked like the 1st or 2nd star of a game? He was -11 in 12 games during the previous playoffs, which I find a little concerning for a player we're planning to pay as much as Toews.
If you were to speculate which do you think is more likely, an extension, or a trade?

Brett Pesce is out long-term.
Maybe there is a trade opportunity there for Conroy.

Isn't he expected to miss 3 weeks? What would CAR do for capspace when he's back? Or would Pesce be a part of the trade?

Brind'Amour was asked, and he said it is much worse than week-to-week. It sounds like he will be out for a really long time.

The majority of UFA's go where the money is the most.

I really hope the Flames don’t extend Hanifin at a higher AAV than the Avs gave to Toews like the-rasta-masta said. 8 * 6.75 seems fair, down the middle between Weegar and Toews.

A shorter AAV certainly keeps his trade value higher. Not a lot of players on 8 year deals get dealt, and their trace value tends to decline over time. You're getting a discount on early years and paying a premium in future years.

He was good enough to be one of 6 dmen on two Olympic teams.

The knock against Bouwmeester is that he made it look easy. He was a great defenseman. I am not sure Hanifin is there but he looks like he is going to be

Friedman walking back the Hanifin extension talks. This start is putting things on pause

There’s no way the Flames should be offering anymore contracts to anyone on this team until they figure out what the root cause of the weak performance is.
This is a horrible team and I don’t think they should be locking it in for the better part of a half decade.
