I mean he can probably get that from another team pretty easily. That terrible Horvat contract set the bar

This is the current core that's locked up for three or more seasons and it's costing us $39.2M without that Lindholm extension, with the extension it's $48.2M locked up to players 28 and older (Andersson the exception).
If we hadn't already signed Kadri I think it would be totally palatable because I agree, Lindholm will likely age well and be a good mentor and basically a more effective Backlund when he reaches the same age.. but having them BOTH signed long-term is just asking for trouble.
I think Lindholm should be traded, and we should be trying to rid ourselves of at least two more names from the list above (with retention) over the next 2 seasons as younger guys are ready to step into the lineup.
And yes Lindholm's don't grow on tree's, but you can draft 2 Centers this summer if you have to, there are other options besides backing up the Brinks truck to anyone willing to stay in Calgary.
|
Anderson will also turn 29 and be looking for long term in 3 years.

Conroy just needs to stand firm. I would prefer they trade Lindholm, but if the offers aren’t there pre-draft, I think they need to let this play out through the summer. Definitely not ideal for it to get to the season, but Lindholm needs to perform to get the big pay day (from another team). Take the value he provides this year and reassess at the TDL.

How many centers have we drafted since Nieuwendyk? How many of them actually panned out other than Monahan and Bennett (who didn't even play C for us)?
It's easier to (re)build a team if you already have at least one established NHL center capable of carrying the load. It lets you make hockey decisions on the rest of your lineup instead of constantly reaching (and foregoing smarter decisions) just for the sake of shoring up the middle.
Bear in mind I am in no way advocating that Lindholm is our #1 for the future. I'm saying it's easier to get from Point A to Point B with a #1 that can bridge the gap.

For the love of god Conroy, trade Lindholm and anyone else you can at this point. Rebuild is being thrown in your face!

So since the Flames can't draft centres, overpay to keep the ones we have? Maybe challenge the scouting department to find one or hire new scouts.

Yep, Sharks owner also isn't one for protracted rebuilds: https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/02/...be-a-surprise/
At least they have the 4th overall pick this year.

How is it overpaying to pay market value for Lindholm? If we're actually rebuilding, then I wouldn't be too worried about cap space. Draft picks and prospects don't use up a lot of dollars.
I'd feel a lot better about getting rid of Markstrom and bridging our rebuild with Lindholm than the other way around (since #1C and #1G are two most important pieces).

He is. From his day 1 press, he said how important Lindholm was to this team and how he's going to be the first call. That's the issue with going with a GM that knows the team, the already existing relationships. The only hope is if he is dead set on it, the number can't over $9M

The idea that you can just draft centers and they will become the next Lindholm is pretty far fetched. Lindholm himself was a #5 overall (far higher than the Flames will likely be drafting this year), and the only reason we got him was because he came very close to not working as anything more than a borderline #2 center.
There's a lot more uncertainty with the draft than many posters are stating.

I think this is my biggest issue right now, for the folks defending bringing him and the same team back.
We can tie ourselves into knots and squint really hard to say this team can ‘contend’ right now, according to ownership’s sell job because they can’t stomach a season without playoff revenue.
The rebuild crowd is branded as being negative around these parts, but I see it as the opposite. Hope for something better and a fresh start, because surely what’s not working can’t continue to be the way.

He is also 29-30 looking to cash in/retirement contract
He also needs someone better him on his line to be really successful.
No thanks
Don’t give him away but trade him for as much as you can.
With or without Lindholm, the Flames are not contending for awhile

#1 centres make $9m, Lindholm is not a #1
He looked like one playing with Gaudreau but that ship sailed and so should he.

I don’t think the rebuild crowd is being branded as negative, I think they’re being branded as unrealistic because the Flames have said multiple times they have no intention of rebuilding.
At a certain point it’s just a fantasy. A nice one, for sure, but just not one that’s actually possible with where we’re at.
I guess maybe the negativity comes from being negative about anything that isn’t a rebuild, which is basically all the most likely options. Which seems like it would suck.

I think the rebuild crowd, myself included, will get what they want if Lindholm doesn’t re-sign and I was starting to get pumped for it. If Lindholm signs then that plan will be out the window.

Has there been indications that they will get rid of Markstrom? Considering Lindholm isn’t interested in a rebuild, I am pretty sure Markstrom is here to stay

I’d guess that if Lindholm wants out, too, they still build around Huberdeau/Kadri/Weegar.
I think the difference between Lindholm staying and going is whether we have Lindholm or the assets he gets in trade, and that’s pretty much it.

Can I just say I love this new regime. They’re so loose lipped and we got so many insiders now it’s great. Between here, other sites, bloggers, and media there is no mystery with the org anymore. It’s really cool I dig it

The rebuild crowd won't be as happy as they think they will. Even without these 4 guys, the Flames still won't be outsucking the worst of the worst. They'll likely land with a 6-10 draft pick in the 2024 draft, which isn't nearly as strong as 2023.
