There just aren't many 30+ goalies who start in the league any more. Fleury - who's meh, Talbot - also meh, Quick - terrible and traded, Bobrovsky - contract boat anchor; Jones - Meh.
You are basically looking at Craig Anderson (who's 41 and a freak) and Darcy Kuemper as guys who'd you count on at this point.

I disagree on trading Markstrom.
His return value is way too low and goalies often bounce back. I also think he's make a great backup for Wolf until Wolf clearly takes over with consistency. May need split duties for a while.
Plus Wolf on an ELC will balance out the contracts.

At the start of the season it seemed like if Vladar had a good year he'd be traded at the deadline for much needed assets. But since both he and Markstrom are among the worst goalies in the league statistically this year that kind of ties the Flames hands.
Flames are still going to need to free up a spot for Wolf, but it doesn't look like they're going to get much, if anything, in return for doing so. Just a disastrous season all around.

I think Markstrom could well rebound and become decent. BUT I also think he’s a hefty contract with term. And he’s getting older, so age will catch up. Goalies are just too inconsistent, outside of one or two examples, to spend big bucks on. Colorado didn’t mind losing Grubauer and then Keumper, and they are picking up fine under Georgiev.
I like Markstrom and I think while he’s not been great he’s been hung out to dry so often it’s compounded the problem. But a deal isn’t just about his current or even future play. It’s about his contract.
That said, if you lose Vladar and bring up Wolf, you are sending a reasonable amount on the tandem.

Or he has the same close relationship with Wolf as he does with Vladar and he helps him transition to being a starter.
Maybe next year Markstrom is the starter, the year after that Wolf gets more starts and it's more of a tandem, and Markstrom's final year he either gets traded or Wolf takes over.
As nice as it would be if Wolf jumped in right away and was dominant it may not be that smooth.

Also in that situation, if Markstrom is playing good but clearly having the net taken from him, he’ll be open to a trade and have value.

It’s crazy how many people think Wolf would be an insta-starter. Oettinger spit with Khudobin his first year. Vasilevskiy played backup for two years.
MAF was sort of an insta starter (as maybe expected from a 1OA), if you ignore his 20 games before going back to Jr (I have no idea how that worked), but wound up with a pretty bad rookie campaign in his first real pro year.

Ideally I think you'd pencil Wolf in for 25-30 games next year.
But down the stretch this year is different could he play 10 games or 50%

The Avs are starting a goalie tonight who has less experience in the AHL than Wolf and has worse numbers.
Food for thought.

Akira Schmid has played 10 games for the Devils this year. 58 total AHL games, 0.910 sv%
Erik Kallgren has played 10 games for the Leafs. 46 total AHL games, 0.898 sv%
Pyotr Kochetkov has played 19 games for Hurricanes. 32 total AHL games, 0.919 sv%
Stuart Skinner has played 34 games for the Oilers this year. 113 total AHL games, 0.906 sv% (0.920 last year)
This is just Wolf comparable goalies playing big roles on playoff teams this year.
Wolf has 91 total AHL games, 0.925 sv%
He has lapped all of these guys and all 4 of them have contributed wins to the NHL teams this year. He's ready.

Wolf has another 13 playoff games last year as well. He's played in well over 100 pro games already.

Vasilevsky split time as a backup in Tampa because Ben Bishop was lighting it up. Oettinger split with Khudobin in Dallas because Bishop got hurt. It is all a matter of circumstance and there is no right or wrong way to bring up goalies. The big thing is that these guys both got a shot after a decent, albeit brief stint in the AHL.
It's worth trying now given this team doesn't have a lot of options unless it is simply resigning itself to missing the playoffs this year. There are many reasons to believe in the player and his ability to be at least a mild upgrade given his track record and consistency as pro thus far.

Just sticking to the cap era…
Kiprusoff
Luongo
Fleury
Osgood
Thomas
Price
Roloson
Nabokov
Elite goalies play well into their mid-late 30s all the time, just like defensemen.
It’s the result of spending your entire career with the game unfolding in front of you. Forwards don’t get that.
