Yah, the media dude for the Flames who makes one quintillionth of what Murray Edwards makes is going to crap all over the team and make a big announcement about firing all the coaching staff. Um. Sure.

Sutter says the team ran out of gas
Dude, YOU are the one who didn’t call a timeout and put the same line back out there after getting scored on
He’s lost the plot

To not even battle hard enough to get the puck out of the zone not once, but twice, is inexcusable for a veteran team that was completely rolling all game. That game should never have been close to getting to OT, and for me, the only questionable goal (outside of the winner) is the second one, but even that was just sloppy net front coverage by the D not tying up sticks and clearing the rebound.
|
I certainly didn't ignore the collapse as per post 99. I'm not the type of fan that pins everything on one player.

Doesn't change the fact that Markstrom has not been getting the job done this season. He's essentially one of the worst starting goaltenders in the league and that's not good enough for a guy making $6 million this season.

Since Lucic was demoted back to the 4th line six games ago they have been outscored 0-3, have an xGF% of 34.77%, and HDCF% of 26.32%. He is a legitimate anchor to any line he is put on. He's simply not an NHL player anymore and the fact he is playing ahead of a guy like Ruzicka is nothing short of idiocy. Just another strike against the head coach.

My only critique is that I think to disrupt the building momentum shift after the 3-2 goal, and given how mentally fragile our team is, Sutter should have called a timeout to give some time / pause / try to push out the momentum build with the crowd a bit. Crowd gives energy, also gives you a chance to chat to the boys and potentially strategize a bit too.
|
Yes, a timeout would have been good there. Coaches underuse their time out in general. It was clear Ottawa was feeling it.
It was a damned good game by the whole team right up until the net pull. I guess that's why this loss feels worse.

Sutter probably expected his team to man up and lock it down. They didn't.
It's interesting -- they've dominated possession for the past two games; were able to overcome the 2-0 deficit against Buffalo but unable to overcome the late 2 goals against Ottawa.
It suggests the team is playing better but is still missing something to get it over the hump right now.

You know that there are 3 2 minute TV timeouts a game.
I don't think that an extra 30 seconds is the difference between a team being exhausted or not. I think so often we lose sight of the fact that the NHL season is a marathon.

He expected it, and so did I. But when else can you use your timeout? Why not get them a longer rest, let Ottawa settle down. Get Markstrom a chance to chill.
To the Flames' credit, they had a good OT, but Ottawa scored on a half chance.

I don't think tiredness was the issue. Ottawa was on a serious roll after the first goal. a TO might have stemmed the momentum a bit.

Pathetic last night, no excuses.
Not sure its the worst loss of the year - Flames played really well most of the game.
Last game of a long road trip against a bottom feeder in the east.
Didn't give up points to a rival. Hopefully the point last night and the 2 surrendered to DET don't haunt them in April.
Would have been worse if pretty boy and his entourage were there (do they ever go to Sens games - not that I care)?

No clue why they don't play him every few games against teams with an enforcer. Would rather see Duehr's speed or Ružička on the 4th with Ritchie and Lewis.
Subtract Markstrom and Lucic for 5+ games and see what happens.

He plays so much better after being sat for a few games.

38-26-18 is close and the Red Wings won the cup this record.
Sutter 2012 Kings won with 40-27-15 but he was only half season as a coach.
Its actually the worst 82 game season for a team to win.
No one had a .892 goalie though.

Man, one day later, and I'm still miffed at how we lost this game. Flames had the game in total lockdown, there's just no excuse for pissing away a point when they're so crucial right now. If Flames miss the playoffs by 1 or 2 points, I guess we can look back to this game as one of the reasons why. Just leaving way too many points on the table.

Well, if they're running out of gas now, it doesn't bode well for their chances of making any significant run in the postseason...

Yes let's take a timeout so Ottawa can rest their first line and draw up a nice play...or not. This loss is on Markstrom .

Flames are in a 4 way tie for second place in the category of least amount regulation losses in the West.
It's something.

Markstrom was the second best goalie and the Flames don't have the guns to outscore that.
