You have to be careful with renovations as a lot of the time it ends up as extremely expensive lipstick on a pig such as with Soldier Field and the team still ends up wanting to build a new facility. It cost 1.15 billion to renovate the Seattle arena and while it's nice, it doesn't feel like a new arena experience.

Honestly if we could back in time and tell the Olympic planning committee to be less twee when designing the new arena, we'd probably in a better place and extended the life space of the Dome. When was the last time it had major renos (excluding the Flood restoration). The one in the mid 90s and then the new scoreboard in the 00s?

I like to think Hedberg would prefer it go uncited. Quoting it takes away the deadpan delivery, and also, it makes it so much better when someone doesn't get the joke

I don't think the sentiment is entirely unfair, Sports franchises are rarely viewed as revenue generators for the owners, they are more seen as equity growth opportunities.

1 NHL arena represents ~10% of the leagues annual revenue (+/-1/2 Billion Dollars). I think in a world where the league mandated 10% of revenue went to infrastructure development, either each team sets aside 10% of revenue for future investment or spends 10% of revenue on mortgages/rent or the league pooled ownership of the facilities and they as a group undertook 1 property investment / year.

And where players were earning 40% of league revenue, you would not see much substantial change in the lifestyles of the players. You would not see reduced competition to work for the league....

My guess is 10% is well within the realm of what most businesses spend on property/rent/facilities annually. It's just that in pro sports that money has been redirected from the business side to other areas, talent, management, marketing, profits...

Got a few posts in to catch up and so far.....

- Shampooing of crotches
- Meth sports
- Sphinx
- Dinnydome

I think that means the bar is sufficiently low now to build whatever expensive scaled down disappointment they envision and no one will buck.

There was a couple studies done several years ago that looked at reno'ing the Dome, or repurposing it. Both studies indicated the costs would be very high, and outright building a new facility would be the more logical path forward. And here we are.

Also, fun times on the arena front. Grabbing some popcorn!

Just fun data facts

EDIT:

I think the lifespan of modern arenas likely has to do the amount of revenue owners can get from the building and making the bowels swanky for the players as a way to entice free agents etc
And Maple Leaf Gardens is still standing

Its almost like a square brick building without an insane roof-structure might last longer, but theres no way thats the reason.

Will the Coyotes open their new arena in Tempe before or after Calgary breaks ground?

I think the Coyotes will move into Arena number 5 before Calgary gets anything done. 6 if this Tempe one won't be #4 in their days in the desert. I always forget if they were in 1 or 2 different ones before the Glendale fiasco.

In other words I think the Dome will still be the Flames home in like 2035 if the team hasn't moved South yet.

A close friend has told me they have been asked to tender for this again not too long ago...I do not have any further detail than that.
