I am steadily moving from totally uncaring about this work to totally enraged that they are wiping their ass with the foundational piece of fantasy literature for our times.
Also, way too much backhanded slander of ROTK in this thread when it was a great movie. Totally faithful reproduction? No absolutely not, but I don't know how anyone can watch that movie and not come away moved and having enjoyed.
I predict people are going to hate how Tom Bombadil is portrayed.
There is a large segment of the population who have hated every single aspect of this show, from the opening title sequence to the colour of the grass. And they spread their message loud and far on social media, YouTube, and hopefully a close, trusted friend or psychologist.

That's pretty much Fandom in general these days, it's gotten pretty cynical.
RoP was a little slow paced and dry, but wonderful visuals. I will probably watch S2, but I'm not really waiting for it anxiously.

Incels, man. Best to just ignore them.

The Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all. Yet hope remains while the Company is true. Go Flames Go!
I'll watch it as well, but I don't have high hopes...
I think it's extremely important that they start off with some compelling episodes. I will watch but may bail after a few episodes if it starts dragging like the first season.

I like it too but it's impossible to compare it to the movies and not be disappointed, and it's inevitable that it will be compared to the movies. As a stand-alone series I think it would be considered pretty good, not great. But in comparison to the movies it's meh. At least it's still better than The Hobbit.

True, but you could say the same for most of tv/movies. Garbage, compared to the LOTR trilogy. It's a masterpiece and any expectations that anything will come close can lead to nothing but crippling disappointment.

It's still only the first season where they had to do a lot of world and character building to setup the big events to come. The Second Age also has relatively little written about it by Tolkien, especially compared to the LotR period so Jackson started from a much better base.

For me it has nothing to do with comparisons to LOTR. I never expected House of Dragon to come close to GOT nor did I expect this show to be on the same level as the LOTR trilogy. That said House of Dragon is a high quality show by its own merit while the first season of ROP is average at best and I'm being kind given how poor the audience scores are for the show on Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes and it's mediocre 6.9 at IMDb.

I just think the characters are one dimensional and not very interesting or likable with a couple of exceptions.
LOTR had compelling characters and dynamics between them, the grandiose-ness and world building aside.
Who's feeling emotionally compelled to follow the bratty elf girl? She has shown few redeeming qualities. She seems to want to prove herself right about Sauron still hanging around just to be right (and been very reckless towards that end) whereas the characters in the fellowship were making a sacrifice for their friends, their homes, and the people they loved.

I actually think the two highlighted areas could resolve themselves. I know a lot of people were rather unhappy with how Galadriel was portrayed, but I think if they play it right, they can use her getting deceived as a way to grow the character. A way to turn her into the version we know from the OT.
With that said, I do agree for the most part. There seemed to be a lot of really poor decisions made by the writers. And I have to wonder if we will eventually look back on some of this similar to how Star Wars fans look at Hayden Christiansen? We may realize the actors were not the problem but it was just poor writing that did them in.
