What's complicated about that? It seems pretty straightforward. Maybe the pick is conditional on Monahan re-signing with them?

No, this isn't true. Shows a very misguided understanding of the cap and actual money.

You're aware Lucic makes .8M and Monahan makes 6M? Moving one has a much bigger impact on the actual budget than the other despite similarities in cap.

Back when you could put any player in the AHL to remove his cap hit the Flames owners still moved Kotalik to get rid of his salary (cap hit was 0). Because it's a business looking to generate profit.

Yes, the Flames spend to the cap and often over it, we should be thankful. But they don't have an infinite budget like the Rangers and Leafs have shown in years past.

It's complicated because Montreal doesn't have cap space. $248,334 in space currently.

Steinberg’s latest comment on it: “Monahan and a 2025 1st to Montreal for something, we just don’t know what yet”

Man, wasn't listening carefully and just had the FAN on in the background - did Steinberg just confirm that it's Monahan plus 1st for "something coming back but don't know yet"? I wasn't focused on listening.

Likely a late round draft pick or low end prospect.

Maybe we get a second or something back (dropping from say round 1 to x) but conditions depend on what happens to Florida's pick and on Montreal = complicated.

I suppose that would make the salary cap work for Montreal.

Has Monahan posted anything on his social media? I wonder with this big delay if maybe the trade isn't actually materializing.

Cautiously optimistic the return will include Montreal’s 2023 1st.

I don't think the owners think that way at all. They think in terms of what they have to pay on a contract overall. They really really don't care that Monahan's contract was paid more evenly and they for sure aren't fussed over $5M in cash at this point.

I am not 100% on this but I think a trade always has to have something going to each side. Even futures have to become real at some point.

If it's the 2025 1st, I hope they have a condition that it's whichever is lower of the Flames or Panther's pick. Not sure if you can put that as a clause or not.

You can option it as a Flames' choice.

So wait.. we traded Monahan and a 1st for salary coming back? that kind of defeats the purpose of sending Monahan and a 1st.
