Darn near impossible.
If you have pick 6 or 7 and want to move up to take the Russian kid you could probably do that.
But moving up from 15? I think there is literally nothing the Flames could offer to make that happen.
I think in any draft it is pretty much impossible. The only one I know of is the Sedin trade string and that was a pretty specific situation

Plus, it's not like the twins were thought of as generational type players from most GM's.

Moving up this year into the top 5-6 would be exceptionally expensive, and a team would have to give up way more than it is likely worth.

So since Nashville lost, Calgary gets the worse pick possible (16th) barring the 0.5% chance Calgary wins the lottery.

That scenario would almost never happen again. The Canucks, iirc, had the 1st and the 3rd, and according to Burke, he told everyone else he would be be the only picking both. Chicago had 1st and traded that to Vancouver to get McCabe and what ended up being the Canucks first round pick the following year. Vancouver then traded it to Atlanta so they could pick Stefan. The Rangers got Brendl at 4.

I bet in a couple weeks there will be a bunch of teams wishing they had the 16th pick...or a first rounder at all even

If this is the case, it may make sense to trade down again.

For an example, Quentin Musty has good stats and an even better name. He might go 24th OA. Gabe Perrault is interesting as well.
It might make sense to pick up a couple of 2nds.

There really doesn't seem to be a lot of drop-off from the 12 to 25 range IMO.

I will be surprised if there aren't several "off the board" picks in the early part of that range.

The only interesting picks that I could see being available, barring something crazy happening, is one of St. Louis's 24 or 29 picks, and Detroit having picks 41, 42 and 43 all in a row. So, let's trade with them! Unlikely top 10 picks will go, and the first double up of picks is Arizona at 12 and Montreal at 16, who are both in rebuilds.

Which is why you keep as high as possible of a pick and hope someone in the top 15 falls to you.

It seems to be a given every year that the bigger players go earlier than most online scouting lists have them. At 16th could there still be a big playmaking centre, goalscoring winger or offensive defenceman available?

I'm not super happy Treliving is out but at least he kept the first rounder this year. Seems like there a lot of ways this draft could go and an impact player is still possible at pick 16.

The more I look at this draft the more I can see a great pick falling to us. Three defencemen seem to dominate the top and if all three are picked before sixteen then some of the great centers fall to us yager, heidt, Danielson. Conversely if the Centers go then Reinbacher or Pellika could fall to us. Both needs.

I don't want to jinx it but it feels good to finally trust the Flames drafting after so many years of first rounders not panning out. Even late firsts seem to be shrewd picks in the last few years.

The whole Valimaki thing was just bad timing and luck, I think but a good pick regardless.

Bennett still has the tools but just can't seem to get it all together. He needs to play bigger than he is and that's mostly confidence, I think.

Yager at 16? Dreamy.

I'm guessing more than few D men make a serious jump up the charts on draft day. Doesn't seem to be a lot of them and correct if I'm wrong but the 2nd most premium position to draft.

I can see a lot of wingers dropping. But there's so many centers in this draft that one is bound to land at the Flames feet.

As long as they take a center, and if they pick up another first rounder somehow.... take another center.

I think they need a centre but even more than that they need a playmaking centre that can carry the puck up the ice and distribute. I think that's why Backlund has been having such good seasons offensively lately. He carries the puck and makes good decisions on passing or driving the net.

Lindholm is a bit opposite offensively. He needs someone to get the puck to him in soft areas.

Kadri can carry but doesn't find his linemates. That works well on a transition but doesn't produce a lot.

So basically the brains of Backlund with the speed and skating of Kadri. Should be easy to get

Final NHL home in the Hall of Fame career of Jagr. First NHL home in the Hall of Fame career of Yager.

My last hurrah daydreaming pie in the sky hope for the Flames at the 2023 draft is this:

Win the lottery, draft 6th, Matvei Michkov falls into their laps, his arrival to the team directly coincides with the opening season of the new rink in 2026.
