Teams submitted there 55 player list on Oct 15, a day before the Flames first game. I doubt Kylington was on their radar at that point.

Yes, the market is ripe with teams lining up at the door to take on a $6.5M 35-40 point player that can't contribute offensively at EV/strength, doesn't kill penalties, or play exceptionally well in his own zone.
Let the offers roll in.

If they just bought Monahan out June 15, they’d have $2.35M dead cap next year and $2M the year after.
It eats up the cap increase, and almost pays for the Gaudreau and Tkachuk
raises.
Worst case scenario.

This is part of the reason why I wanted Monahan traded this past offseason. I knew he was not going to have the same opportunities this season and was likely going to struggle because of it.
I didn't think he'd have 0 even strength goals 20% into the season. But then again, I've always thought he was a pretty overrated goal scorer, but he does have underrated playmaking ability. At the very least though, right now, he's still playing hard and winning faceoffs. So, he can still help the team a bit even if his contract looks bad going forward. Hopefully some teams still think they can "fix" him though.

The Hurricanes are paying Kotkaniemi $6.1M for a worse season than Monahan’s last year.
And this year, Monahan is still more than twice the player.
I know age etc but for a centre on a one-year deal, $6.35M with good powerplay production and average possession stats at even strength, it’s not unmanageable.

After what a GM gave up for Ristolainen I’m done predicting what players values are to GM’s
I think what we can all agree on is that this team has evolved past needing Monahan

Dmitri Filipovic with a nice write up of Kylington’s season and a good mixtape of his breakouts and defensive work. Completely and single handedly changing the dynamic of Calgary’s defense this season

It's unmanageable for the Flames because he's playing on the 4th line more often than not and giving the team nothing at 5-5 that a replacement level player wouldn't do for a fraction of the cost.
How much more potent would the Flame PP look with a $4-5M winger thrown into the mix in place of Monahan? Ruzicka and Pelletier are even looking like they could offer a heck of a lot more to the 4th line at this point.

Monahan hasn't been on the 4th line for a few games

I'm talking about for another team to absorb.
It's not a great contract, but it's not Jeff Skinner either.

Monahan has been significantly better playing with Mangiapane and Coleman.

I liked him better on the 4th line to be honest. Plays are dying on his stick and he's turning the puck over a lot.

Kylington has been a very welcome mobile puck addition on the back end. He is providing what I hoped hanifin would.
I am very happy to eat this crow after long believing this player wouldnt make it in the NHL. He deserves a lot of praise as it appears he put in a lot of work to get here.

It's a shame that Kylington and Mackey's contracts are not flipped. Oliver is going to get a big raise next year.

As an aside Gaudreau-Frolik-Bennett played like 32 minutes together in their entire tenure in Calgary, so not sure that was ever really a thriving line.
|
But if they truly went with the "don't mess with a good thing" mantra then Hanifin and Tanev would still be a pair.
Sometimes you have to have a look at other combinations.

The good thing is, even if he went the arbitration route, I think his entire career will be evaluated rather than just this season. So his short, unproductive season last year would be included and analyzed as much as this season.
Ultimately, I think both sides come to a multi year agreement. Things could change from today going into the summer of 2022, but I could see a 2 or 3 year deal with a reasonable cap hit that brings him into free agency. I think that would satisfy both sides: player gets some term and stability with the possibility of a massive pay day upon free agency. GM gets a nice cap hit with low risk and potential for high reward.
