In fairness to Scorp, he hasn’t had the benefit of having professional hockey writers to follow and emulate here in Calgary.
All he has to do is read or watch Eric Francis and he can’t help but allow biases and opinions to creep into his work.
The old timers here had the benefit of a guy like Duhatschek, a seriously good and hall of fame hockey writer.
The young ones get the norm of today’s “journalism” which is sensationalism and biased opinions.
This is quite the jerkish post
Because you disagree with his view you are labeling him as someone who is allowing biases to creep into his work?
Brutal man

Christ man, I don't like fights because they cause concussions and CTE. I'm close to someone with chronic migraines caused by head injuries sustained in his hockey career. I cringe whenever I see a fight. That's just me. If that makes me biased, great.
Again, MacEwen was the one wanting a fight because he got hit clean and was butt hurt. If he just took the hit and moved on Gudbranson wouldn't have done anything.
Gudbranson did exactly his job and his coach and teammates noticed

Gudbranson should be lauded - not blasted - for sticking up there.
Mackey fought a couple of times at the end of last year, but he spent 4 years not fighting in the NCAA. MacEwen is a pretty tough customer. Maybe Mackey could have stuck up for himself there, but there is nothing wrong with Gudbranson doing what he did. For years now the Flames have been pushovers. Flames have legit swagger now out there, and what Gudbranson did goes a LONG way both in the room in making this team tighter, making the other teams think twice next time, and helping make everyone feel safe and protected out there.
Besides, that's a big part of his job.
Lucic, Gudbranson, Ritchie, plus a lot of team toughness in Tkachuk, Coleman, Zadorov, etc. This team is not a pushover any longer, that's for sure.
Kylington continues to impress tonight IMO. Was pretty steady all things considered.
Duehr is a player. With Pitlick out - and depending on what happens with the D - I can see him starting as the 13th forward. He has thus far earned it.
This is Sutter hockey. Everyone thinks it is nothing but defensive smash-mouth hockey, but it is the relentless forecheck and speed that I equate to Sutter hockey. Gaudreau is a fricken superstar in Sutter hockey, much like I thought he was under Hartley hockey. Gaudreau is amazing playing at pace, which I think is a reason why he is much better on breakaways in-game, rather than shoot-outs.
Can't wait to see Monahan and Hanifin in this group.
For me, Zadorov was the weak link this game, aside from that hit. Poor passes all night, and a few giveaways/poor positioning. Like I said when the Flames acquired him - good think Darryl Sutter is the coach, as I bet he straightens him right out.
There was lots of change this off-season, even if you are one of the people who feel there wasn't enough change. Lost the captain, back-up goalie, and brought in loads of leadership and solid defensively astute players. Brought in some toughness too. This is a very different team, and it takes a while to gel. Maybe it ends up working out, maybe it falls apart, but it is way too early yet to thump any chests or try to get Conan to hear your lamentations.
Just enjoy the evolution of this club this season, and let the chips fall where they may.

That was a good effort and looked a lot like the Flames' better performances last year, and the Canucks' typical ones. Very in sync, especially the top guys. Very encouraging.

Not putting down Scorpion at all….I grew up watching hockey in the 80’s…I’m not uneducated and I understand the danger of fights. Having said that, and I don’t like that I feel this way, but I really enjoy a good honest fight in a game. Maybe I’m just a dinosaur.

if you want to be a professional hockey writer, it might serve you well to come to understand that aspect of the game
Or maybe he’s allowed to have a different opinion than you.
Fighting in a preseason game is pretty useless and honestly it’s pretty much useless 95% of the time in a normal game too.
I’m fine if Gudbranson does that in a regular season game, but honestly not sure there is really a point in risking getting hurt there in a preseason game and fighting a guy who’s going to be an AHLer
And guess what…Scorp is already getting paid to write about hockey, hence he’s already a professional hockey writer.
Meaning more people have already paid to hear his take on the sport than will ever pay to hear about your takes on the sport.
And Jiri says it down below but more should be written about the long term impacts of head trauma and CTE and fighting should be eliminated if they truly have the players best interests in mind.

To me, hockey fights are like shoot-outs to avoid a tie game - exciting to watch, but I’d rather get them out of the game.
