From the top of my head there hasn't been many top defenceman from Finland. I wonder why that is? Either way I think there's something to that. Not many great defencemen come from Finland and I think that's not about to change with the Canucks pick. Not writing him off but I definitely wouldn't have taken him at fifth.

I have a simple explanation:
Their goalies are so good they don't need to play defense

Thanks for all the videos. Some of his moves really reminds me of Iggy! This is exciting. Looks like he has a heavy shot, quick release, can tip and pass. I like that he is always around the net. Gaudreau will be able to find him. Hope his finish will translate to the NHL.

You are most likely right - but it is interesting that his Dad did play 18 games and 4 playoff games for Hartley in Atlanta.
Played pretty good for him too - putting up 18 points in those 22 games.

If Bennett was going to make the team after being drafted, I don't see why Tkachuk can't make it either. He's got at least 15lbs on Bennett at the same age.
As long as he's sheltered, he should be fine

I wonder if they announce a signing soon.
Looked back and BT inked Sam on July 25th the year he was drafted.
EDIT: and last year they signed Kylington on July 15th, Andersson on Sept 14th

The Andersson signing was after an impressive Penticton tournament. I think the Kylington came after the initial development camp. If I had to guess, since he came out of the CHL, it will be closer to main camp like Andersson.

I was at a Canada Day party and chatted with a man who summers in PEI but lives in London the rest of the year. He has done some Jr. B reffing too, so he knows the game well. The topic of Tkachuk came up and he said he watched him regularly and thought Calgary may have gotten the best guy in the draft. He says the skating issue has been absurdly exaggerated and that his game will translate 100% at the NHL level. He also said that with his drive he'd be surprised if he didn't make the Flames this season.

Janko and Tkachuk bonding? That seems like it could be a nice little pair to me.

Would be great if he ends up making Puljujarvi look like a chump. I like when the lower drafting teams develop better players than the ####y lottery teams that tanked.

Yes, it makes me wonder if the hockey Gods haven't been smiling on us all along and we just didn't realize it.

I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility to believe that there is a chance that Tkachuk out performs Puljujarvi this season.
One of the things that keeps coming up amongst hockey people when they talk about Tkachuk is the term, NHL ready.
