I really hope we don't bring Sutter back. It was such boring hockey. We had Kipper standing on his head for 30 shots against and then maybe Iginla would get a scoring chance during his shift. Other than that, there was nothing fun to watch. There was even a few games in the 2004 run where I was getting nervous or hopeless because the Flames had a hard time generating natural offense. Sutter is also annoying in his post-game pressers.

But I'm also of the belief that Hartley has been the best coach I can remember, since these Flames have been the most entertaining to watch in a long time

Word I'm hearing from Ottawa is owner Melnyk has told GM he can go high on dollar offer for coach, but it'll come off internal player budget
Ha! That's pretty funny. Melnyk is such a tight wad

We should lock this up and create a new poll. One without Bruce, add Dineen, Carlyle, etc.

Yes. Because every hockey player in the NHL is exactly the same, and coaches unilaterally control the pace of individual hockey games.

You judge a coach purely on entertainment factor?

How many GMs are fired after three seasons? Great question. Here's an abbreviated answer.

Anaheim Ducks

Pierre Gauthier - 3 years, 9 months
Bryan Murray - 2 years
Brian Burke - 3 years, 4 months

Buffalo Sabres

John Muckler - 3 years, 9 months
John Anderson - 7 months

Calgary Flames

Jay Feaster - Just under 3 years.
Craig Button - 2 years, 10 months

Carolina Hurricanes / Hartford Whalers

Jack Kelley - 3 years, 11 months
Larry Pleau - 2 years, 1 month
Ed Johnston - 3 years
Brian Burke - 1 year, 4 months
Paul Holmgren - 9 months

Chicago Blackhawks

Mike Keenan - 3 years
Bob Murray - 2 years
Mike Smith - 3 years
Dale Talon - 4 years

Colorado Avalanche / Quebec Nordiques

Martin Madden - 1 year, 7 months
Pierre Page - 4 years
Francois Giguere - 2 years, 11 months

Dallas Stars

Jack Ferreira - 1 year, 11 months
Bobby Clarke - 2 years
Brett Hull/Les Jackson - 1 year, six months
Joe Nieuwendyk - 3 years, 11 months

Detroit Red Wings

Ned Harkness - 3 years
Alex Delvecchio - 2 years 10 months
Ted Lindsay - 3 years, 1 month
Jimmy Skinner - 2 years, 2 months
Bryan Murray - 3 years, 11 months
Jim Devallano/Scotty Bowman - 3 years

I could keep going, but I think you get the point. It is not unheard of to see a GM sacked after a short tenure. Do I think it is likely? Probably not. But if the Flames under-perform again and it is a result of what is perceived as poor management decisions Burke may have no choice. Professional sports is a fickle business and sometimes the fans blood lust can force the hand of a team. Remember how quickly we went from repeating "In Sutter We Trust" to thinking he had lost his mind?

To shift the discussion back to the topic.

I posted some stuff on Dale Hawerchuk on the next Flames coach news and rumors thread. Intriguing choice given youth of the Flames.

Treliving is increasingly likely to go off the board with a newbie to NHL head coaching. Sutter coaching Flames again is highly unlikely given same ownership group.

What other up and coming coaches are out there ready for the jump?

Hawerchuk would be an intriguing choice. I would imagine that he would be flexible in his systems and design a system to meet the talent rather than force the players into a system.

Hawerchuk has never coached pros (or men).

That is a big jump and a large percentage of guys struggle with it on their first attempt. Way to much risk in hiring Hawerchuk IMO.
