Just saw on Sportsnet that the Jays have signed LHP Johan Santana.

Jays sign pitcher Johan Santana to a minor league deal, as per mlb twitter. Spring training invite.

Poor year last year but he's been pretty decent over his career (moving to Rogers would help his bat) and can play CF in a pinch.

Yeah, I think that if the FA market is slim than Navarro would be the offer for an outfielder in a trade. Navarro has to go somewhere now unless he can play in the outfield.

Yup, maybe not straight up we could hope to find X for Navarro then outfielder for X. Although I think the Padres might take Navarro direct for Venable since they have better depth at of then at c.
I was hoping that we could parlay Navarro into a real 2B or cost-efficient relievers but neither of those seem likely so I think he'd be best used to provide help in the outfield.
Johan Santana, I hope he can be who he was. If he's close to what he was the last time he pitched then he's our #5 starter (allowing us to put both Estrada and Sanchez into the bullpen). He doesn't even have to stay healthy... just healthy enough to get us past Norris's super-two date and put the finishing touches on in AAA.

@SNBarryDavis: Saunders ended up having 70% of meniscus removed. Great news for #bluejays. Recovery time 4-6 weeks

Am I the only one who's really skeptical about this newest report on Saunders? It's almost like they're doing anything possible to rush him back. Ideally I'd want him back at 100%. I'm just skeptical I guess, but to go from 4 months to 6 weeks in a day is odd.

^Was just reading about this. Seemed interesting. Apparently this will heal him up now but will cause problems down the road for him, possibly arthritis after retirement. I would not have done that If I was him.

No, it's accurate... the time line that had him out 4 months was based on repairing the damage... removing it shortens the time line but puts Saunders at greater risk of arthriitis later in life.

The problem is when they evaluated it, it wasn't really fixable, it was that bad. The doctor said that it was 50-50 at best that it the surgery option would have worked. If it didn't it would have required it to be removed any way.

Problem I have with this (I'm not a doctor), is that he's not coming back at 100%, and instantly that becomes an excuse when his play is subpar. I'm really tired of the Jays in particular using injuries as an excuse. If it were me I'd want the guy to have the regular surgery to have him good longer term, but I'd want to open the wallet a little to get a replacement (either through a signing or a trade). I haven't read the article, so pardon my ignorance, but from the outside it seems like the team (and probably Saunders as well), just want the short term benefits of forcing the comeback. I just don't want any excuses from the team if he's not back 100%.

Yuck, Arencibia 2.0... except that he can only play corner outfield (and not very well at that). Hopefully he spends the year with the Bisons.

I don't know much about Viciedo but he sounds like Juan Francisco redux.

Michael Saunders' dad is a doctor so I'm sure the decision to do the procedure was a very informed one.
Exciting news to see him back so much earlier, but don't count on this being his only injury trouble this year. Guy is made of glass.

Yeah, you've gotta know we're going to be seeing Kevin Pillar at some point this season - I just really hope we don't see much of Viciedo. I had enough Juan Francisco-style play last year to last me for a while, thank you.
First spring training game tomorrow!

Gibbons doesn't seem over the moon about the signing. Interesting.
Quote:
John Gibbons wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about the notion of Dayan Viciedo helping the Blue Jays. But the manager did remember an eye-popping homer Viciedo hit at the Rogers Centre last season.

“He was available,” Gibbons said. “He’s got some big-league time in. Been successful, to a certain extent. Bring him to camp, see what he is.”

Over at Grantland, Jonah Keri has the Jays ranked #7 in the first edition of The 30 for this year.
