Why it matters is Heather sounded wonderful, didn't drag it on and made it count. Time to puck drop was minimized without rushing. Canyon drags on and it's so sloooow in the country drawl, which stereotypes Calgary and it just seems to take forever.

I've noticed fewer people are in their seats at game time to miss this. At least 2 people I know of.

George Canyon is the 'Flames word mark 3rd Jersey' of anthem singers.

If he dropped the fake drawl and cheeseball synth, he'd be just fine. But otherwise, not so much.

Who else gets a recording star to sing the national anthem.

Sometimes the things people bitch about become amazing

I despise the synth track, but otherwise, his rendition vocally is on point.

Oh good god. You are more then entitled to your opinion on which anthem singer you liked better, or that you even don't like Canyon. But don't try and fabricate "facts" to try and back up your opinion.

I much prefer Canyon to Heather, and know plenty who agree. Clearly there are others that feel the opposite. In the end it doesn't matter.

I don't even watch the anthems (I'm not local so I don't get to go to live games). To be completely honest I don't think it should be apart of professional hockey anyways. Play the anthem of the winning team in an international bout, but these days in the NHL so few of the players (in the grand scheme, Canadian teams obviously that is different) play in their home country and many broadcasts don't show the anthems, so who are they doing it for?

They do it for the fans.

Is that where the bar is set? A recording artist?
If it is, it ought to be moved.

The Flames just need to find someone who can walk out, and sing the song. I think everyone would respect that.

Fred Lays, from Nova Scotia, is an actor pretending to be George Canyon, a cowboy from out west. I'd rather his role-play be confined to his music career, and not imposed on our national anthem at an NHL game.

Ooh, a "recording star". I actually like some country music and don't really care about the Western thing Calgary does, but being impressed by a "recording star" singing our national anthem makes us really look like rubes.

I may be completely wrong, but isn't it a law that the anthem be sung at public gatherings?

Also cannot stand Canyon. Bring back Heather!

It's just a tradition. Though it would be interesting to see who they would arrest if it was a law and the Flames went without the anthem. Maybe Harvey? Lanny? You know the fuzz would love to do the perp walk with a familiar face wearing the cuffs.

They really need to get rid of the synthesizer. It's jarring and feels misplaced. It is not 1980s; that sound is not cool for the anthem today.

That's exactly what George Canyon does. I guess it's just too bad that The Weekend, Drake and Blood Sweat and Tears don't live in High River and have an agreement to be the Flames main anthem singer.

Why is it so hard to appreciate that we have a singer of George Canyons' calibre doing the anthems. When Sara and Tegan audition...........

Because different people have different tastes? The stuff people bitch about...

George Canyon might be a great country singer but the national anthem isn't a country song, and he sings it like it is one so that's what people are bothered by.

It is cringeworthy listening to him sing the anthem in his fake country accent.

I don't really mind Canyon anymore. Exceot for how he changes the anthem's tune for the last 3 words!

Because he ####ing sucks, that's why.

Give us a normal person without the BS synth. I don't care what his credentials are, Heather was a hell of lot better than this clown
