Even past drafts which were perceived as weak, the #1 pick is never traded prior to draft day, I don't think it has ever happened in the NHL, not recently anyways. The closest I can think of is the Berard/ Redden deal but that was announced after the picks were made. I would say there are teams that regret not trading down or trading the pick away (Yakapov) or at least seeing what is out there and determining a value.

It sounds like the Panthers are expecting a pick back in exchange for number one. And it sounds like nine spots is the max that they would move down.
Quote:
17. Florida GM Dale Tallon said on Prime Time Sports last week that it's no guarantee the Panthers keep the first-overall selection in June. In a follow-up conversation, he was asked how far down the team would be willing to move. "We'll make the final decision in our scouting meetings, but probably between seven and 10," he said. What would it take for another team to get the top selection? "Also to be determined, but probably a young player who can help us."

I kinda messed that part up. Wrong info. So back on the couch I go for pulling a Feaster.
Would NYI even want to trade him for something we have though?

Nope, G. Reinhart is one of their top defensive prospects, if not the best defensive prospect they have.

1999 and 2003 the number 3 team moved up to number 1 both years by adding a 3rd round pick. Same time in 1999 number 4 team moved up to number 1 by adding 2 x 3rd rounders. That was Burke dealing for the Sedin picks. 2002 number 1 and number 3 swapped picks for the option to swap again the next year.

My turn for a crazy idea....
Perhaps it might be enough to trade Russell and our fourth for first. Florida can then flip our fourth down further for another young player. They get the pick they want, and two young good bodies that can contribute.
If those outside the "top five" want in, they may offer more for our fourth to Florida than we give up to Florida for the first.
Hey, I like Russell but his value has never been higher either.

In terms of value, what about Mikael Backlund and the 4th overall pick for the 1st overall pick and the 31st overall pick?

That wouldn't even do it. Backlund and the 4th overall wouldn't even get the first.

Backlund, 4th, and our Colorado 2nd? Ehh.. maybe I'm dreaming. I'm not even sure it'd be worth it.

They might do it at that, maybe our 2nd instead.... But it's not worth trading Backlund, we could use another center, and there will be one to choose from at #4.

I think you are wrong. I think Backlund + our 4th would easily get it done.

Honestly, if we have to trade #4, I don't want to.
BUT, if we can get #5 from NYI (without giving up #4), I would think about it...

Easily? Backlund had one good year.
Flames perspective: Trading Backlund right now would hurt us. He's only going to get better and Florida would honestly would get a steal of a deal a few years later.
Florida perspective: Why trade our 1st overall to move down 3 spots and get a center that has only proven himself for one year?
I think Tallon would consider, but he wouldn't easily do it. Besides, I am pretty sure a team would pay a lot more than what the Flames offered if that was considered an easy proposal.
S. Reinhart/Bennett/Draisaitl/Dal Colle + Backlund > Ekblad

Depends. Tallon has a rep for knowing the value of young players. Has Tallon had interest in Backlund before?

What about Backlund, Wideman (with some salary retained) + our two seconds for Florida's first?
Draft Ekblad at 1 and the best Centre available at 4.

Not sure they'd bite on Wideman... I'd see them wanting Wotherspoon rather than Wideman. And I don't think they go with the trade unless we offer up our 4th. They still at least want to draft in the top 10.
Edit: Florida is stacked in the center position, they'd probably draft Dal Colle.

Is getting the first choice really worth losing backlund AND the 4th? Even if hes not in the plans for the future, is going 3 spots higher to pick 'our guy' going to win us a cup or gonna make or break it?
Too much kool-aid. imo

I was going to respond to Foreverflamefan in a much less flattering way.
This thread only makes sense if Talon is reasonable. That is we give up our first and a young secondary player such as Byron or maybe a little more for his first. As someone else said, Talon could also trade our pick to move down further if he wanted.

I agree that if Tallon was smart, he would trade down twice like you guys are saying.
Flames get Ekblad/Reinhart (CGY 1st overall)
Toronto gets the chance of drafting Bennett/Draisaitl (TOR 4th overall)
FLA gets a great return from two teams + a top ten pick (FLA 8th overall).
Everybody wins.
