Yeah it happened fast, but Backes was hunched over to try to play the puck - Seabrook should have been aware of his body posture and where that means his head is.
He elevated his shoulders through the hit. Plain and simple. The NHL will never get rid of head contact hits due to speed, but elevating your shoulders to gain leverage in a hit is a move that should be suspended every time when there is head contact. Pretty easy call to me, and they got it right.

3 is justified. That is the exact kind of hit that they are trying to take out of the game, and I have no problem with a star player sitting 3 playoff games for what is clearly an illegal, reckless, and malicious hit.
Kudos, NHL.

On audio heard via the CBC television feed, Keith is heard saying "Wakey, wakey" to Backes — a reference to the captain being potentially knocked out by the hit.
"I saw them talking to him," Blues forward Ryan Reaves said. "It makes it a little more gutless. I don't think there's any need for that when a hit like that happens. You don't need to be going after him when he doesn't even know where he is.
"I'm not happy about that. I don't think anybody in this organization is happy about it....To see that happen, I think is just embarrassing in that organization for that to happen."

Hitchcock said the NHL should address that as well.
"That's something that the league can deal with, Duncan's comments or his mannerisms or whatever," Hitchcock said. "They can deal with that. I'm sure there will be somebody saying something to him."
Teams trash talk all the time, all season long. The crap they say would make Andrew Dice Clay blush.
Which no one has a problem with unless of course the guy who's taking the trash talking can barely stand on his feet and just took a pretty big hit to his head. That was classless by Keith.

I agree - 3 games is too much for that hit. Hugely physical game with guys throwing really hard hits all over the ice. It was a big hit and crossed the line a bit, but there was no elbow, no charge, or anything like that. Just a shoulder that hit him in the head. At what point is it the recipient's fault if their head is down?
Bad hit. Should have been suspended and was.
Need to get that out of the game.

glad to see the suspension. at this stage, F the hawks, hope they crash and burn.
I was pretty sick of toews after the lockout with some of his statements, and now watching how he/keith/seabrook played this past game, not much respect left. Hoping the hawks era of success comes to a screetching halt soon.
I've got no time for the Blues complaining about anything cheap.
They're a team of cheap-shot artists, and pretty much the "new" Canucks in my books. The Blues are the only team I'm actively cheering against in these playoffs.

Wrong.
There is not a team out there less Canucks than the Blues. Look at their opponents ... which of the two has been more Canucks? If your answer is the Blues you are biased or blind, or a Canucks fan.

Meanwhile, the NHL will not issue any supplemental discipline for Chicago forward Bryan Bickell, who was whistled for kneeing Vladimir Sobotka with 6:05 remaining in regulation.
"The hit on Sobotka, there was a similar hit on (Alex Pietrangelo) in the first period that was really concerning by the same player," Hitchcock said. "When you're leg-whipping people, it's a concern because that's career-ending. That's something you don't want to see on either side.
"That's a big concern for me, the safety of the players. That part bothers me more than ... the hit on (Backes) is a hit that went awry. But the hit on Sobotka was a continuation of what happened to Petro in the first period."
I totally agree with this, Hitchcock is so on point. Guy is a great hockey mind.
Additionally Sobotka didn't skate on Sunday, apparently still hurt and was playing hurt in OT which makes his play on the game winner even more impressive.

Raffi has a history of cheap shots while Seabrook doesn't which played a factor in the number of games Brent got. That said I think he should have got 10 games. I crange everytime I see the replay and think how lucky Backes was that they didn't cart him off the ice in a stretcher. He could have been hurt alot worse.

yeah I know, still if it was a lesser player he would have gotten more that hit is about as bad as it gets
