I still think this is the best way to handle things. Burke is keeping his options open and maintaining a good relationship with his players. if Burke can't find good value for Cammalleri (as in, a good prospect or a 1st round pick) - then retain him. He's a good player, who can help shelter our other LW prospects for years to come.
Would it be sexy to get a 1st round pick in a trade? Yeah, I'd prefer it. But I'd sooner see Cammalleri re-signed than dealt for a less than ideal return.
Yeah Burke has been handling things pretty respectfully for players in that he's telling guys like Stajan and Cammalleri that the franchise values them and they would like to keep them at a price. Stajan accepted and if Cammalleri doesn't and gets moved at the deadline at least he leaves feeling like more than just a pawn to recoup draft picks.
Haven't heard anything on the Butler front and I assume if they aren't negotiating then Burke will possibly be actively shopping him in the next few weeks.
It does make sense; Flames have two big challenges: one, make the cap floor, and two, have veterans in the room who can show the "kids" what it means to be a pro (preparation, work ethic, etc) and Cammy fits that bill on both fronts. Trading Cammy and then trying to sign that "role model" UFA might be much harder to do.
If we sign all our vets, there will be no "kids" to mentor.

my thoughts exactly, we have a strong prospect pool including guys that aren't even on the heat yet that will be knocking on the door in the next 2-3 years.
I'm all for moving him for whatever we can get to be honest.
“@RealKyper: #Flames Cammalleri and Burke have exchanged contract ideas with little progress on extension. Betting man has him traded before re-signing”

Traded or re-signed, it's just really nice to start hearing from players how well Burke treats them and how professional he's been.
Then in a recent Burke interview he shared a tidbit how Edwards/King have encouraged him to be fair with players in his offers and not to low-ball them.
Not sure how things were in the Feaster era but it's pretty telling how the Flames reputation around the league seems to have already taken a boost since Burke took over. Glad they are finally getting back to doing things the right way. This will reap dividends down the road.

If we resign Cammy it just makes a mockery of everyone who was running around saying that Burke was going to fleece every GM under the sun at the trade deadline, get us a load of extra picks and decent prospects. Well so far we have seen squat of the great Burke in action, all we have is a prospect that was suspended and a player that cannot skate for toffee but he brings toughness to the line up, woopee do.
Sounds to me like all of the BB fans are covering their behinds by using the "he'll be a great mentor for the kids" line when all Burke does is resign everyone and trade no one. I hope I am proved wrong and Burke does make some decent trades before the 5th but so far his showing is pretty underwhelming.

Sorry just very quickly:
resign = voluntarily leave a job or position
re-sign = to sign (again a document)

I think you continue the talks to keep things good with the player so they don't go out into the media and say you have demanded a trade (lowering trade value because teams now know the backs are against the wall). I would assume as a player when a contract is coming due, you want to get a contract sorted out, because if there is a catastrophic injury, no team is going to re-sign them. The player doesn't want to wait until the last minute.
Cammalleri is likely looking for 2 things right now:
1. A guaranteed contract, likely a long term one.
2. To play where he wants to play.
Probably in that order as well. He is not looking to cash out like a first time UFA and get the spoils of a complete open market after the season, he probably wants a sunset contract in a handful of locales for the security of it at this point in his career.
Does he have a wife and kids?

This sounds more like a "I hate Brian Burke" post than an actual opinion on the Cammalleri situation.
