Spent 6-7 hours on Saturday cutting melamine piece for the cabinet boxes.

Now on to mortising, pre drilling, fastening ash front edgeing, etc. It is so nice to use good quality tools. Tables saws with a sliding table are the best.

I'm jealous of the good tools! My table saw is a cheapo Skil. One day I'll build a garage and have a proper space for good tools. The basement room workshop/laundry/bike storage/furnace/junk is limited for woodworking...

We have a new home- and we have no idea where our property lines are.

Is this a service the city will help us with or do we need to hire surveyors? I want to make sure I know where to put my fence etc.

Your real property report should have property lines on it, no?

Like no idea at all?

There will be survey pins you could look for if you have a remote idea of where they should be. Even use a metal detector to help you out locating where to dig.

Tried digging half my yard up yesterday and could not find it- will have to borrow a metal detector from my BIL and try that. Thanks.

Will also try to find my real property report for a better guide.

I don't think they have metal survey markers on every lot. I thought they had them around the neighborhood as reference points to do the survey from, not at the corner of each lot. BUying a used house should get you a property report, I'd think they should provide one with a new one, too. Have you talked to the builder?

So I've began planning my deck for a permit. I can't seem to find the minimum distance requirement between footings?

The deck will be about 9 feet in the air so footings will be most likely 6x6's but how far apart do they need to be spaced?

I'm not positive on this as structural isn't exactly my specialty, however give these guys a call:

It depends on your beam and joist length. The more columns you have the smaller your beams need to be.

There are quite a few factors that can come into play, you will have to refer to the span tables in the building code.

Anyone have a recommendation for Stump grinding...

I took down a 30 foot spruce in the backyard this past weekend and only have the stump left to remove.

I'm gonna dig at it myself but may need to just grind it down a couple feet.

How big is the deck going to be? Along with beam and joist size the total load and soil bearing capacity needs to be considered. In my experience by the time you have enough footing area you spans between columns are pretty small anyway and beam size is less important.

You can rent them at Rogers Rent All.

I rented a wood chipper from them. They have a few different size grinders.

Spent most of the weekend tearing out my old deck. I now want to punch the previous owner in the head. Ground level deck (~14" off grade) with all of the beams and joists just set on the ground. And not a single bit of treated wood in sight. One upside of everything being completely rotten is it is tearing down quick. 2x10s on edge for joists, completely rotted from top to bottom. It's a wonder I didn't kill anyone.

All the grade needs to be fixed to slope away from the house (novel idea) then I'll figure out footings.

People who half ass things drive me nuts. It doesn't take much more time or money to build things the right way.

I hear you about botched / half-assed jobs. I am almost 100% certain that our paving stone patio was done with regular playground sand and every year after the winter thaw or a big rain storm sand is everywhere. I am wondering if it would be better to tear them out and do it over again or just re-sod the area if that is better or go with a concrete / cement pad.

Home Depot rents them as well. Not a fun job, but it needs to be done.

I decided screw it and build a big raised garden bed around my 3 stumps. Sure grows tasty potatoes!

Any advice on hot water heaters?

We have a large soaker tub in our master bath and a shower in our second bathroom. We are finishing a redevelopment of our basement and added a bathroom with a shower down there. On the weekends if my wife has a bath or if we have company over, there's never enough hot water to go around.

We've got what I assume is your regular builder grade hot water heater currently. I've rented places before that had a second hot water heater. Is that the way to go? Or would it be better to get a bigger/better hot water heater? Or an on demand system?

Tankless is great for never running out of hot water. Loved that part in our old house, when we had one.

It also takes up much less space in your furnace/utility room, if that's an issue.

Just in the middle of a kitchen reno right now and will be mounting the cabinets later on this week. Anyone have any experience mounting cabinets onto a cement wall? Just wondering the best system to attachment them securely. It's an ikea kitchen so it's just the rails that I need to get onto the wall. Thanks for any advice!
