Have you ever been to a municipal golf course on a summer weekend? No rich white billionaires there. It is a great outdoor game and people love playing it. There used to be courses around Calgary where you can play for $1/hole. Claresholm or Nanton might still be the case, although I am not sure anymore. Golf is very democratic and equalizing. If you play like crap, it doesn't matter how much money you make to other people in your foursome.

1. What ghetto? We're talking about Calgary.

2. Do you really think rich people play public courses? Have you been to a public course lately/ever?

3. Stop being a racist.

It isn't much different from hockey. A bunch of rich white people playing a rich white man's sport. Look at how minorities are represented in almost every other major team sport - basketball, soccer, baseball, and football. The vast majority of the best players are non-whites. Sure, there is the odd exception that proves the rule, like Tiger Woods or Jarome Iginla, but I think we can all agree that most of the people that play both golf and ice hockey come from white, middle class and above families.

A dollar a game? Club rental, cart rental, green fees, you're looking at a hundred bucks a shot for the average golfer. It is hardly a game that the average person that can just pick up and play.

1. Have you ever been to Falconridge? I lived there for years, and I honestly feel safer visiting my father in Torrance, California, which is right next to Compton.

2. I guess it depends on your definition of rich. Someone that has a hundred bucks to slap down for a single afternoon is rich in my book.

3. I'm not a racist at all.

Having been in Falconridge hundreds of times, and knowing multiple families who live there, I can assure you that there is nothing unsafe about Falconridge, nor anywhere else in Calgary.

You honestly don't think that there is a single area in Calgary that is unsafe late at night? I suppose we must have different ideas on what it means to be safe. Yes, Calgary certainly is a much safer city than most, but crime does happen, and crime definitely happens in some areas more than others. It is simply not reasonable to say that no area in Calgary is unsafe, because if that were true, there would be no violent crime at all in our fair city. Falconridge is certainly less safe a neighbourhood to walk your dog in late at night than say, Shaughnessy or Chaparral. Would you agree with that?

I hate Shaughnessy. It's pretty scary.

Your argument (bolded above) assumes that one incident of violent crime makes an area unsafe. That doesn't seem to be a reasonable standard for "safety".

So, Evan Woolley has the following on his website:

Commitment – Alderman Mar divulged his ambitions to step down and run for other offices in Council on June 25, 2012 as well as in the media. If elected I commit to fulfilling my full four year term and will not run for other public offices during this time.

Isn't the council term three years?

I believe it's changing to four years? If not soon? Can anyone verify?

It's changing to 4 years after this election. Next one will be in 2017.

Thanks, didn't know that.

Section 10(1) is repealed and the following is substituted:
General term of office
10(1)
Commencing with the year 2013,
(a) the members of an elected authority elected at a general
election hold office for a te
rm of 4 years, and
(b) a general election shall be held every 4th year.

I don't think there's a single street that would be classified as unsafe, even at night, no. Perhaps if I was female, yes.

The original comparision was to places where there are legitimate reasons to feel unsafe, even during the day.

And, no, Falconridge is no less safe than any other community in Calgary.

It takes some courage to walk by the drop-in centre area at night.

Well, I'd rather walk by the Drop-In Centre than sleep on that first floor, which is where many people (not even homeless, just drunk people) end up. Cops drop off alot of people there on a nightly basis.

Comparatively speaking, if you've ever seen that floor on a Friday late night, or smelled it, you'd think getting beaten with with a burlap sack full of doorknobs and scorpions would be like a causal walk in the park on a sunny day.

Carter must be involved in the election in some way, because I got his 'poll' this evening.

We probably got the same one Slava...4 questions, from BBold? I thought it might be one of his, but I didn't hear anything when I tweeted about it and he'll usually say something.

Ya, that is the name of his company IIRC. Pretty obvious push for the mayor against the Manning Centre. I'm sure the results will come out if they're favourable.
