As for not having any picks in the first 3 rounds, our top 9 is currently:

Tanguay - O'Reilly - Iginla
Glencross - Cammalleri - Stempniak
Cervenka - Backlund - Hudler
Baertschi - Stajan
Horak

I think a couple guys have to get moved regardless of whether or not we are in the playoff race.

Plus the odds of the Flames pick being #2 is VERY LOW. The likelyhood of it being #9 (Dougie Hamilton) is much more likely. The third round pick is whatever, easy to get back

The odds of picking a player as good as Dougie Hamilton with a #9 pick are also low. Only aobut half of #9 picks end up as full time NHLers.

The stigma of the offer sheet doesn't exist as it once did, if it ever did. Vancouver, St. Louis, San Jose, and Philly have all given out offer sheets in recent years. Have those teams been hampered because of it?

I think it's a good move personally but you have to wonder who will be leaving.

Draft picks + Calgary Flames = Bigger gamble than this.

Thats assuming that we wouldn't make any other moves. Lose Kipper and Iggy and we could very easily be picking 1st or 2nd.

I agree with whoever said this looks a lot like the Kessel trade. This ownership seems to have the same mentality as the Leafs did back then.

So which center is more coveted and has higher potential?

Ryan O'Reilly or Matt Duschene?

I'm guessing Feaster woke up this morning and read the thread about Cervenka not actually being a center which forced his hand.

That depends if his development is linear and whether or not his output was rooted in his play or the fact that he was paired with a player like Landeskog. There was a pretty stark contrast in his numbers with and without Landeskog last season, and when he was separated from him he went from a player who outscored the opposition to one that got outscored by a 2:1 margin. Conversely, Landeskog's numbers were as good or better when he wasn't playing with O'Reilly compared to when he was with him.

Dean Molberg ‏@fan960boomer If the Flames DO get O'Reilly, could be a scramble to get under cap next season. Compliance buy out almost assured somewhere.

Good point by boomer, Flames may buyout someone this summer to get under the cap for next season.

Past performance of a single breakout season is not a good measure of future performance. Ask anybody who remembers the Gary Leeman trade.

Good to hear we didnt go after a player who will gas out in our altitude. Kid can play and its what this team needed for sure. Ill be upset to see our 1st go if its a high one but the deal makes some sense.

7 days to match is reasonable in the off season. But if the season has already started, teams should only have 3 days to match

No its not rebuilding. Rebuilding would be trading away your top assets because its deemed they can't get it done. If anything they've just given this group a giant stamp of approval by adding to the team while not taking away.

The flames are going all in on this move. Hopefully it works.

I think if you looked at most playoff calibre teams, he would be a 2nd line player. Obviously, because of Colorado's lack of depth, he played more than most 2nd liners. Based on talent though, I think he belongs on the 2nd line. I don't think O'Reilly as a the 1st line centre gets a team to the playoffs. I would love to be worng though. I actually like him as a players.

This reminds me of the Penner offersheet from a few years ago.

Trade for Ryane Clowe and we are set.

This is a pretty good thing, I think. Absolutely shocking, but exciting.

I don't think that's a top 10 pick Colorado is getting in return if the Flames have O'Reilly on the team.

I'm wondering if there isn't a plan to recoup that 1st (and perhaps more) between now and the trade deadline? Although I haven't done the math, the Flames have to get under the new cap for next year, which likely means moving one or more of Iginla (as I doubt they'd let him walk for nothing) Cammalleri or Bouwmeester.

Wow! Did NOT expect to log in and see this thread! The money seems a tad too high, but I really like the move the more I think it over. Basically what it comes down to (IMO) is that if you truly think the Flames were going to be a bottom 5 team in the league this season then I can understand how you could view it as a bad trade. But with that said, I certainly do not think the Flames will be bottom 5 this year and with that assumption in mind I don't see how you could dislike this move.

This draft, though hyped up and despite a very solid top 5, is not actually all that deep from some of the scouting reports I've read recently. And really, what are the chances a #6-12 draft pick + a #66-72 draft pick are going to end up being better value then a guy who's already scored 55 points (and is amazing defensively and oh by the way, is a centre) at 22 years old? I say small, very small.

Good move Feaster, and I don't say that often.

I made the suggestion that we do this earlier in the month without thinking about the cost. Now that it happened I kinda feel sick. This franchise, man.
