I don't think they'd even have to do that. He's under contract to the Flames, but according to the CBA, only NHL games count towards the 10 game limit. If he plays in the AHL, there's no danger of a year of his contract being burned.
When Reinhart and Leach were sent to Abbotsford, Leach was signed to an ATO, but Reinhart was just assigned by the Flames -- http://www.abbotsfordheat.com/ViewAr...CLID=205407818:

Abbotsford, BC - The Abbotsford Heat announced today that forward Max Reinhart has been assigned to Abbotsford (AHL) from Calgary (NHL). The Heat also announced today that defenseman Joey Leach has been signed to an ATO (amateur tryout).

At the end of the day, I think it's just semantics anyway since they don't get paid during the playoffs except for their per diem, but there might be insurance differences if they were to get injured.
I think the preference would be for him to be a top-line team leader on a long playoff run in Portland than to try to find a spot for him on the Heat.

Sven hurt. Took a weird fall and was pissed coming to the bench slamming his stick. Seems to be ok.

Portland imploding.
5-2 lead going to third third, it's now tied after two goals in 11 seconds by Kamloops.

What a collapse for the Winterhawks.
Kamloops scores 5 in the third and wins 7-6 forcing Game 7 on Wednesday in Portland.

Portland went into the third up 5-2, get out shot 21-9 and out scored 5-1.
After 4 unanswered Blazer goals, the Hawks tied it up 26 seconds later (4:13 left).
Blazers score with 21 seconds left to win.
3-0 series lead is now 3-3.
Wow, quite a series.

Wow, and Sven has completely come back to earth on the scoresheet the past 3 games. Listened to portions of this game and did not sound like he was having the dominance with the puck that he was having earlier this playoffs. He needs to figure out whats wrong for game 7, Portland needs him to play at the top of his game to salvage this series.

The manner that the Winterhawks have been losing in (blowing huge leads) is quite disturbing, but the Blazers are an exceptional team. I hope Portland will come through in game 7.

It happens. No player can be dominant all of the time. As a contemporary example, just look at Malkin and Crosby in the Pittsburgh-Philadelphia series. I just hope that Portland wins game 7 so that he has time to find his game again.
