So how does Madden do it? I haven't played the series in ages, but I thought they used to have tons of vintage teams.

It's a matter of getting those players to sign agreements, it just becomes much more difficult when they aren't represented by a collective body. An agreement with the NHLPA gets you everyone in the NHL (or repped by the NHLPA to be accurate), an agreement with the PHPA gets you minor leaguers etc. For retired players you typically don't have that collective entity so you're siging individual players, which obviously gets to be a bit taxing. Going ahead without the names but using the likeness is likely not somethign EA would be willing to do, they're already in a legal battle over NCAA around that issue, the last thing they'd want to do is add more headaches on that front.

The NHL 12 demo will be available through Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network beginning August 23. It will include three modes: Play Now, Be A Pro, and Hockey Ultimate Team. The Play Now mode will let users play a third period of a game between the last year's Cup finalists, Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins.

As long as your PS3 is outside of a 10km squared area of any Shoppers Drug Mart, it should behave as expected.

In HUT, most people must win games or trade players to earn pucks. Vancouver fans can loot them!

Do people actually play HUT?
I know there must be a community for it, but it can't be that big considering I never hear anyone talking about it.

^^^I've played it a fair amount, but I find there generally is a great dispairity between those who buy themselves a team and those who don't. It's very difficult and incredibly time consuming to train players up to the same levels, I find.

I disagree. You win a 5 game offline tournament and you can buy yourself a jumbo pack from it.

If there was ever a time for Grand Theft Auto: "Mob Frenzy" to come out, and have a relevant product tie in, this would be the year.
Both for NHL 2012, and Fifa 2012 for any games played in London.

It'd be awesome to have The French Connection in the game.
But it'd be lucky if they even put Perreault in :/

i got back into hut last month and am hovering at around top 20 for the month......it's decent but gets old when all you play are super juiced teams, or teams that position lock (seriously wtf? hockey ultimate TEAM) or teams that are way crappier than you backing out, or teams that are around the same as you backing out. between all that you get in some really good games though

Oh, I loved super intense back-and-forth HUT games. They were too few and far between for me.
I also really enjoyed seeing how many points my AHL fourth line would get me! Sometimes, I wondered, why play NHLers at all?
I hope next year they have a few online tournaments
with a very low salary cap or low star rating. That could add some variety.

what they need is more HUT players so that you will be matched with others who are playing in the same tournament.....right now i'm playing with a fairly good team (Perron-Berglund-Backes, Ryan-Getzlaf-Perry, Glencross-T. Mitchell-Moss, Eager-Slater-Afinogenov) but i still get matched with teams that are ~80 ranked in everything. being matched in the same tournament will really help you play teams that are similar (or at least can't be juiced too much)......

People people people...
Make your 4th line in HUT scrubs at league min (580?) something like that... and then never, ever ever ever play them. Save that $$ and improve your top 3. Never use training cards on them, their salary will never increase.
You have to manage lines every stoppage to make sure the computer doesn't put them out... but you should be doing that anyways.
Same for your spare goalie. Put in a scrub at league minimum.
