If the contract is for 3 years, this worker can afford to strike for 22 1/2 day before losing out.

Mind you they're screwed if they live pay cheque to pay cheque.

I sincerely hope you do and don't take what the union leadership takes as the truth. I worked for 20 years in a union enviroment and found that the leadership tends to distort the truth to fit thier agenda. Saying the lockout is going to hurt the members while ignoring how thier rotating strikes has hurt business owners is pure BS. We the public want nothing to do with your beefs against CP. Keep us out of it - thank you!

Yeah. Calculate in the interest for a payday loan or re-connection fees when the power gets cut-off.
Even given the 7 day scenario, losing a week of pay to make it up in a year is pretty pointless. Considering you've made up your wages based on the old pay rate, it negates the raise for that year. If they're on strike for a month, it negates the raise for the entire contract. So you're now working for 3 years at the same rate as last year.

Word is the Feds are going to legislate the Posties back to work once they've delt with the Air Canada situation.

Don't fall the crap your union has been spewing.

How much do members pay in monthly union dues? Last I read it was around $70 in 2008? CUPW site cites 54,000 members. If you have 54,000 workers paying $70 x 12 months = $45,360,000 the Union is making every year. What does it do with all that money???

Laywers bills, paying for union events, meetings, etc. Emergency funds for strikes so workers can eek out a meager income (ie a few hundred dollars a month).
$70 is probably on the low end. The average I've seen is around $100/mo.

Supporting their political interests, donating money to their political party of choice.
Paying their union heads huge salaries and bonuses.

But when corporations do the same thing, that's super duper okily dokily. CEOs make far more in salary and bonuses than union bosses. And corporate lobbyists have far more political clout than unions.

CEO's should make more money then union bosses, for the most part they work to create a profitable environment, make money for their share holders, try to expand the business which creates new jobs.
Union heads on the other hand are destructive.
As a voting member of a union, whould you be ok with your union supporting radical causes in the middle east? Companies that I work for might contribute to political parties and agenda's that I don't agree with, but at least I'm not footing the bill with it by having it taken out of my paycheck without my input.

As of the close of business tomorrow, the US Postal Service will not be accepting any mail destined for Canada except Global Express Guaranteed mail.
GXG, for short, is transported and delivered by FedEx, which is why the service is still available.
Just a heads up from the States.

We'll still get our packages sent before then though right? It just might take a very long time...

+1 The rotating strike didn't bother me at all. Anything I'm sending by Canada Post isn't valuable/urgent enough to need 5 days a week delivery.
The full lockout though is definitely a PITA.

In a lot of cases after the strike is over the union members will have a backlog of vacation time to clear through. There isn't enough time left in the year for everyone to take their allotted days so the corporation will pay members to surrender some of them. I am not sure if that is the case with Canada Post, but it does happen.
As a side note, I have been reading the board for a while and finally decided to contribute.
