Well for all intents and purposes, there is one playoff race in baseball as we get to the final month. Every other playoff spot is pretty much nailed down.
Yankees and Red Sox are both going to the playoffs, just a question of who wins the AL East and gets to avoid Texas in the Division round. I guess it's a penant race.
Other than that San Francisco and Arizona are battling for the NL West. But after that I think Texas, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Philly are going to run away with their Divisions....and the second best team in the NL the Braves who are miles back of Philly are miles ahead of anyone for the Wild card.

Lots of waiver movement today. Giants have claimed Heath Bell, Yankees have claimed Carlos Pena and it sounds like both Thome and Kubel have been claimed, the Indians are likely in on one of them.

Sounds like the Cubs have pulled Pena back off waivers and Heath Bell tweeted that he wasn't traded.

The Giants likely claimed Bell so that no other NL teams could get him, and he will likely remain a Padre (though Wilson and Romo are injured).

I definitely agree with mostly all of what you've said here, but the Angels are only 2.5 games back of Texas and have been playing some pretty good baseball lately. Also, they start a three game set against the Rangers tomorrow. That will be a good series to pay attention to. I still think, like you, that the Rangers will take the division.

Yankees make MLB history today with 3 Grand Slams in 1 game: Cano, Martin and Granderson
Yankees were losing 7 - 1 at early vs. the A's.
21 - 8 in the 8th. A's pitchers have walked 13 batters up to this point
edit: Andruw Jones makes it 22 - 8. YIKES

yeah just an ugly game all around. Probably the worst game I have ever seen the A's play. Oh well, another long off season, but they did take 2 of 3 from the Yankees. Although, I would rather the Yankees win than the Red Sox.

Jim Thome accepted the trade to the Indians and the A's sent Kevin Kouzmanoff to the Rockies, the A's sent him down earlier in the year and had no intentions of keeping him.

SF is probably out of the pennant race (6 games back), unless they can sweep AZ. Too many injuries this year.

ATLANTA (AP)—Washington manager Davey Johnson on Tuesday confirmed plans for Stephen Strasburg(notes) to make his first 2011 start for the Nationals on Sept. 6.
Strasburg will start for Double-A Harrisburg on Thursday. It is expected to be his final rehab appearance in his comeback from Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow.
If all goes well, Strasburg will make his much-anticipated start at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

That will probably draw an extra 25,000 people to the ballpark. Hopefully he recovers to pre surgery form. It's been awhile since a pitcher could create the buzz he does with every start.
