I find Christmas in Calgary is all about who can complain the most about only earning $100+K/year.
I love the city, but a lot of the people here make me sick.

I haven't ever gotten a Christmas bonus even at an engineering job. People dt at oil companies and law firms are so spoiled.

We all dislike each other. I have never worked for a company as negative as this. It's quite amazing we don't have people offing themselves regularly.

all assumptions. out biggest expenses after wages are probably a large format printer, which ends up being paid for by the clients anyway, enmax and shaw bills. we might have $50,000 of overhead annually.
me and my co-worker figure that there is about $200,000 profit this year, and somehow the company is running paycheck to paycheck.

Just wondering, for engineers that work oil/gas here do you guys get bonus's and how much?
I didn't get a christmas bonus, but I do get quarterly bonus's and our Q2 reports came out this week conveniently around Christmas. I also got 2 lunches from bosses of 2 groups I worked in this year, my boss is awsome.

I'm not really in a business where Christmas bonuses come along but I remember a long time ago one unhappy boss threatening to withhold my bonus of $25 and jug of Cologna Red wine.
My uncontrollable smirk didn't go over too well and I wasn't there too much longer after that in any event.

There are probably a lot more expenses than that. Typically an employee costs about 2 to 3 times their salary once you include benefits (presuming you get them), vacation, office space, accounting/human resources time, etc., though it varies depending on what sort of benefits you get. In some businesses insurance can also be a huge cost. I don't know how your company is set up, but most companies have some employees that don't directly bring in money (e.g. administrative support), and their salaries have to come out of the money brought in by those who do. The company probably also needs to pay various external people like their accountant, lawyer, etc. which can add up. Edit - almost forgot one of the biggest, taxes.
25% does sound a bit low, but if the boss is only bringing in $100,000 then there may be a lot of other expenses you aren't aware of.

This is the first year I have gotten a bonus - but it was called a year-end bonus, not a Christmas bonus. I don't think there's any difference though, as it still came before Christmas. Anyway - I knew I was getting something - but this was way bigger than I expected, so it was awesome!
I agree one shouldn't expect it, but now I know that if it goes down next year, I will be a little dissappointed.

All I can get

One fellow I know went to his wife's office party. The "party" was a sales pitch for Multi Level Marketing (by the boss's wife) and the "bonus" was product samples.

we get no benefits. we pay for any blue cross plans out of our own pockets. office space is in a house, that has long been paid off. we have only 3 people in the company, including the boss. sure, taxes, accounting and lawyer have some cost to it. when the boss goes away, my co-worker does any invoicing and accounting, so we all know where the company expenses stand. we're somewhat baffled.

I surf CalgaryPuck of a few hours on company time, and I get to keep my job. That's a bonus and a half.

Ok, you may have a case then - 25% does seem awfully low under those circumstances.
