I laugh when people expect co-workers to behave properly at Christmas parties. It's a male/female get-together with free-flowing liquor and some sex appeal. What do you think is going to happen?

No Christmas party for me. Although we do get to play Salmonella Russion Roulette at the Potluck lunch. I miss the days of sweet, sweet open bars and people getting too drank. Best parties were when I worked with a bunch of Newfoundlanders. Good crew to party with, that's for sure.

Sorry, not to derail, but everytime I see the user name MisterPants I think of the Fumbles episode from Robot Chicken

Especially starting at 1:24, but the whole skit is awesome.

And back to your christmas party discussion.

My advice is to drink as little liquor as possible. It's not high school grad, this company pays your mortgage, keep it professional. Do you really want to be known as the guy that is desperate to drink $80 of free overpriced alcohol?

Get hammered on your own time if you insist...

Drunken debauchery belongs at home. Behind closed doors. With loved ones.

How was that not a wise decision, you can always get another job, a threesome lasts a lifetime.

My advice.....don't get drunker than the boss, and don't engage in the conversations where people are talking smack about the company or its employees. I guarantee you'll regret that in the morning.

As an employer, I expect my guys to have a good time, I totally don't mind if they get smashed, but there is a line. Barfing at the party, public nudity and excessive sh*t talking is a baaaaaaaad move.

What kind of person doesn't go to the company Christmas party? In my opinion, it might look worse in your bosses eyes to not attend than to have a bit too much to drink at the party.

You have to be so careful of what you do especially when the economy is tough.

Its ok to drink, get funny get tipsy, but the people that get absoutely blasted are taking a major risk.
Amen to the above.

I always considered them a duty/requirement and therefore not a place for frivolity. Make an appearance, get the hell out of there.

Now that I'm big and ugly and long-lived, I just say no to all of them and get away with it.

What a fun guy I am!!!

I work for a small IT company now (only 6 people), and we went to dinner and had a few drinks which was really nice. However, when you get a large group of people drinking, the normal office gossip tends to come up- except it's unfiltered.

For example- I've been working for this company for 6 years, but before that I was a manager for Enterprise (The Rental Car Place) and we had a company Christmas party for the entire Kansas City area. There were probably 2000 people there, it was formal- and it was of course open bar and 'casino night.' My 'boss' ended up sleeping with one of the new girls who just graduated from College and everyone found out about it. The next day it was posted on the Enterprise message boards, and his wife (who had just had a baby and moved from Seattle to KC to support him) found out about it. She took the baby, left him, he lost his job and ran away to Vegas with the College grad where he apparently gambles for a living. Seriously.

Moral of the story- Big Company Christmas parties end in tragedy when everyone is drunk. If you go, make polite conversation, don't engage in gossip and don't bring any attention to yourself. If you want to have some real fun- leave and go to a bar and THEN talk about everyone!
I'm not seeing the tragedy there.

If I read this correctly it looks like the guy traded in a career in the exciting world of Kansas City car rentals and a wife and kid for a career as a professional gambler in Las Vegas and a college girl. If only Sutter could make a trade that good

Well- actually, what happened was a guy who worked as a District Manager for Enterprise and made about $200K a year got drunk and screwed a dumb blonde bimbo, lost his job, his wife and his kid and went to Vegas to be a 'professional gambler'- And the last I heard the new gig didn't have such a steady paycheque, he was dumped by the dumb blonde (who by the way had an enormous butt), sued by his ex wife for child support he can't pay, and he's living in a week-to-week motel waiting to 'win the big one.'

But hey- you go ahead and take it as you will.. personally I thought it was sort of a bad move on his part..

Just remember... the majority of people will probably be having no more than one or two drinks. And if you have more than that, you'll probably end up looking somewhat silly to them.
