Cowboys & Aliens looks awesome. I'll miss Knightly (I like the skinny girls), but Cruz is awesome too!

Looks pretty bad IMO.
This is what happens when you milk a franchise for all it is worth.

I want this to be good, I really enjoyed the first movie. And the voodoo chick in the second movie, really turned my crank rotten teeth and all. I pertend the third movie didn't happen.

The Pirates movies are good fun, I usually check them out. Big fan of Kiera Knightly, pretty disappointing that she's not in the new one, Penelope Cruz is annoying.

The first one was pretty decent. The sequel was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I thought transformers 2 was awesome compared to it. I didn't bother with the third. It's a shame because I love depp, like pirates and the locations, sets, special effects etc are all top notch.
The plots don't make a lick of sense and the characters ramble nonsensical bull#### half the movie and it really gets irritating after a few minutes.
Another example of wasted potential.

A scene I will never tire of seeing is the introduction of Sparrow in the first film. Epic swelling music, a sunset scene, looking towards something in the distance and <bam> he's on a small little sinking boat (and drifts into dock to step right off the mast as it sinks).
Set the tone for the whole movie perfectly.

I can't believe how many (presumably) adult men are in here talking about an upcoming Disney pirate movie...

I used to hate One Piece cause it looked down right stupid. There are a lot of antics that are juvenile and silly, but funny enough, being urged to stick with the manga and be patient, One Piece is surprisingly good at character development and story.
Nice thing about the anime is you do get to see the characters grow, from a bunch of kids with the target audience of pre-teens, to adulthood. Yeah, it's not an easy anime to get into, you have to bypass a lot of the sillyness, but the good elements do come through, which probably explains why this series is the most popular manga/anime in japan.
Also, the fight scenes are what makes this anime awesome. The main character Luffy and his straw hat pirates do learn from each passing battle and get stronger. They would often revisit how far each character has come by pitting them up againts opponents that think they're strong, but gets utterly destroyed when they go up against the straw hat crew.

Personally the best scene for me was the first time you see the Pearl entering the harbour at night to attack the town then they flash to Jack's jail cell and you hear the first ripple of cannon fire. Jack runs to his window and looks down and you get the georgeous shot of the Pearl ripping the town to shreds.
As good as Johnny Depp was in the first movie, Geoffrey Rush was brilliant as Barbossa. I found what made him strong was that he was a villian, but a very sympathetic villian.
He didn't want to kill Elizabeth Swan so there was a gallantry to him, and when he explained the aztec curse to her he sounded like a man that was desparate to get rid of it.
And his dying scene when he simply stated "I feel . . . cold" was actually pretty touching.
The first movie had a sense of real fun and light heartedness, it was a movie that didn't take itself seriously, but it had a good underlying story. It was a movie that was meant to be light hearted, but had some really well done dark moments.
Even the villians as much as they were pirates were not terrible people and you could feel some sympathy for them.
Even the last lines by Sparrow were quite cool and should have set up the next movie really well
[ last lines]
Jack Sparrow: Now... bring me that horizon.
[ humming]
Jack Sparrow: "And really bad eggs." Drink up me 'earties. Yo ho.
[ snaps compass shut]
But the second and third movies were terrible because they were over bloated the humer was forced and Jack Sparrow went from having some nobility in him to be a completely unlikable character who was selfish, cowardly and weak. They overcompensated for this by taking Elizabeth from being a smart but clearly feminine heroine to be almost a guy.

Depp should have won a best actor for the first movie.

I never had much beef with the second movie. Maybe I should watch it again. The third one was a fat pile of turd though.

Totally agree. I had to go out and have some beers after the last line of the movie.
